No Surprise: Detroit Leads U.S. Cities with 17.9% Unemployment

Among U.S. cities with a population of 1 million or more, Detroit had the highest unemployment rate at 17.9 percent as of August 2009. Not surprisingly, this is the highest figure ever recorded for the Detroit metro area (Warren and Livonia included) since the Department of Labor began keeping tabs 26 years ago.

Metro Detroit's unemployment rate increased 7.9 percent year-over-year from August 2008 -- also the highest in the nation.

I'm pretty sure Detroit has fewer than 1M ppl. In fact, Wiki says 912K.

The sad thing is, if you look at unemployment in general, Michigan is a big leader.

Detroit does have less than 1 million, but it looks like the report was for metro areas. Detroit-Warren-Livonia, in this case.

Poor Detroit (and Windsor). I don't mind seeing companies restructure and fold if they've made mistakes, but I always feel for those workers who are unlucky enough to be sacrificed in the effort.

The bright side is 82.1% of people are employed. So most people have money.

Yeah most people work at Popeyes.

Driving through Metro Detroit into the city proper is a lesson in modern capitalism. Slinking through Troy and Southfield, all the insurance agents and dentists skim around town in Beamers and Benzes, but as soon as you hit the city limits everyone's driving an 88 Oldsmobile all of a sudden.

Unemployment is 28.9% in the city of Detroit itself. Many in the Metro area of Detroit have also taken pay cuts or reduced hours. I have seen my income decrease by 20% as everyone at our company, top to bottom, took a pay reduction to help keep the company afloat. The field of Architecture has really taken a pounding.

Employment rate may not bounce back for some time considering that the Big 3 are in the process of shifting more of their production to outside the United States - Canada/Mexico.

Been to Detroit once and never going back. Its bad when you can smell the pollution in the air before getting there. No thanks.
