Volkswagen released this official sketch of its upcoming midsize sedan. It will be built in the company's new Tennessee assembly plant and be slightly larger than the current Passat.
Like most sketches, this one makes the upcoming sedan look all sporty and stuff. But if history is any indication, the car that arrives next year won't be anything like this, save for the grille and maybe the shape of the C-pillar.
We'll see soon enough as this car may very well show up at the L.A. Auto Show in early December in not in Detroit a month later.

What a shame, I was hoping to see those 24" rims.

If you're a VW fan then there is no need to get too excited over this NMS. One of the higher VW executives has already mentioned that this car is going to be made in the USA for the USA. This car will not be as nice as other VW in term of luxury, but it will offer the "size" that is good for the N.A. market, and be priced closer to the Camry and the Accord. According to him, don't look for VW and Audi's famous interior design in this new NMS since many in N.A. would not know how to appreciate it, which I tend to agree. I read these comments by him a while back and do not remember exactly when and where.

The VW portfolio just confuses me so much. First they say the Passat's overall volume in the U.S. is low but they are keeping the CC for U.S. consumption. In turn, VW will produce a cheaper sedan that will directly compete with cars like the Accord, Camry, Malibu and Altima.
In many ways, VW seems to want to play in the mainstream segment with vehicles like the Beetle, Golf, Jetta, lower end Passats and the up coming Polo. On the other hand they also want to play in the "premium" segments with vehicles like the higher end Passats, Eos, the CC, Toureg and the Phaeton. I didn't even include other vehicles that VW doesn't offer in the U.S. At times it seems like VW just burns through its resources and just develops various cars just for the hell of it.

Maybe it will be a Sebring underneath, similar to the Routan.
