It's been in the works for some time and now it's finally official. General Motors has signed a "definitive agreement" to sell its Hummer brand to Tengzhong, a Chinese industrial company.
According to GM's statement, it will continue to build both the H2 and the H3 for the new owners until June of 2011. An optional 12-month extension could push production well into 2012.
The statement also noted that the new company is exploring the possibility of a diesel-powered H3 to sell in markets outside the U.S. Reducing fuel consumption will be one of the new company's goals moving forward.

It might be interesting. Hummer has become rather meaningless since they stopped making the H1 and carried on with rebodied GM SUVs.
Tengzhong doesn't seem to have any passenger car lines, only heavy equipment and commericial trucks.

Perhaps they will take the name and look and put it on something interesting.

The only way a Hummer will become more fuel efficient is it to be parked permanently.

It was a stupid purchase for GM and it will be for the Chinese as well.......if you want to build cars and truck for the military then fine but as a consumer brand it crapped out super fast when oil hit $3 a gallon and more.

I've heard rumors that the sale went for $150M. Thing is, I dunno if that's a good deal or not.

On the contrary, when your starting point is so low, the only way to go is up.

The H3 gets typically the same mileage as any other mid-SUV...the H2 on the other hand....

i own a h3 and get about 18 miles to a gallon on the hiway. if you don't own one then you really don't understand that fuel mileage is not the main consideration for buying one. also total annual use is the proper way to figure vehicle fuel use. i have a cobalt that uses much more fuel annually.

Finally, there will be less heaps of metal on a wheels blocking my view on a road. It didn't even have a decent off road capabilities not to mention other characteristics required by modern cars. GMC should be the next one to go for sale.

"It didn't even have a decent off road capabilities"
Nonsense. While the H2 and H3 were not in the same league as the H1 they were far better off road then the trucks they were based on and 90% of the so called "SUVs" out there these days.
"The only way a Hummer will become more fuel efficient is it to be parked permanently."
It's easy to improve it, just add a diesel. It would suit the image perfectly as all real Hummers were diesels anyhow.

Lot of people say that but it's not reflected in what people buy. Look at the IL long term fleet... most of the cars can't beat 20 mpg average. A diesel Hummer would beat half the cars in the fleet and easily beat the the larger crossovers.
Like I said before, it should be interesting to see what they do with the name and look. I'm hoping to see it on some real off road trucks with some nice heavy duty parts.

"While the H2 and H3 were not in the same league as the H1 they were far better off road then the trucks they were based on and 90% of the so called "SUVs" out there these days." Where did you get this number? Could you provide a link to this information.
My friends and I took this car to Mammoth Mountain during winter season. This car on a snow was worst than Honda Element. I've never driven it in a desert or rocks but if I would go places like this Hummer wouldn't be a smart choice either. H2 is an expensive SUV. There are plenty of other options to chose from for this money. How about VW Touarag 2 TDI or Land Rover? I get patriotic sometimes too, but not this time. There is no way H2 can be batter than my examples above. I know it's sad to realize but Hummer is an awful SUV.
