This is an oldie, but goodie. From what I understand, these two dealers have been going at their "billboard war" for quite awhile. Good stuff! For the record? I'll take an S5!!!

I actually like this as it's presented in an adult, professional way.

Do individual dealers control their own advertising like this, or is it an overall corporate initiative?

Should be interesting to see how Audi responds...

I too would like to see how Audi answers - please post if they do.

If I'm not mistaken they took those billboards down a while ago; there was even a story about it somehere. Unless Audi made the same mistake (doubt it), what's up with the description makin' it seem as if they're there now?

Wow. Pointless advertising. It says nothing about their product
"Yeah, I saw a white car on your billboard, but it didn't say which it was. It said BMW on it and it had a twin kidney-shaped grill."
At least Audi tells you what car it is.

I think it's brillant. Anyone that will buy a BMW doesn't need to be told what the car is. These play on image and exposure.
Even long after the boards are gone, people are still talking about them.
Now that's good exposure.

The M3 billboard was paid for by Santa Monica BMW and was only up for a week. It was replaced by a Barney's Co-Op ad, and as a result Audi put this one up:

Brilliant marketing, for both of them. These "ad wars" generated a ton of free press.

Years ago in England (where I spent my time as a yoof) there was a similar campaign between Porsche and Lotus (!). Porsche had an ad for it's 944, with the title "German Mustard".
Lotus put up an ad for it's Elite (I think), with the title "English Mustard is hotter!"
(I swear I'm not that old...I was a toddler at the time.....)
