Not likely, especially when it comes to muscle cars like the Ford Mustang. Of all the vehicles in Ford's lineup, the iconic pony car seems like the last piece of property the company would let out of its sight.
So what are we to make of these latest spy pictures that show a Mustang prototype emerging from GM's proving grounds in Milford, MI? Collaboration? Theft? A GM employee with an odd sense of humor and bad taste in paint?

Those wheels on that Buick are tiny. Aveo wheels?

@hondacura4
Those are probably 17" wheels on the LaCrosse. It's just that cars like the Toyota Venza think the need 20" wheels to like good. In other words we are used to bigger than average wheels.

whatever they did to the mustang they sure put the front diffuser through its paces.

good eye Jackson. It looks like it is limping away from an epic battle.
And I agree with Subaru123. The wheels aren't small. We've just come to expect stupid "dubs" as being tasteful and normal.

Those wheels dont fit the Buick. Wheels can be 16" and look fine, but with the design of the car they look small and out-of-place.

The high beltline makes the wheels look smaller than they really are. Yet another negative to the trend.

I'm not in to big wheels but I'm with the rest of the people that say those wheels look tiny! XFE model?

Maybe GM is trying to figure out how to drop weight off its Camaro. I don't get the camo, though. A new Mustang shouldn't be coming for another 4-5 years.

Why camouflage the mustang but leave the logo right on the front? Is there something really crazy going on that I don't see? the vehicle looks like the standard Mustang shape to me.

GM testing a new powertrain camouflaged under a Mustang body?

I think it's part of a new trend in camouflage: Paint all the cars in your test--your prototype and the competitors you're bringing along for comparison--so the spy photographer can't tell which is the development car and which is the production car. Classic misdirection.

So then..... given the wheels, perhaps the red car is actually a Prius camo'ed as a Buick?

Is it me or is the exhaust tip on the Mustang a little longer/larger than usual?
greenpony says:

Only a V6 Mustang too... I wonder if they dropped Ford's 3.5 or 3.7L V6 in there to do some benchmark testing prior to Ford's official Mustang powertrain revamp.

A plastic zebra or is it a plastic pony?

"Those are probably 17" wheels on the LaCrosse."
I'm not into super large rims but these ARE NOT 17 inchers. 15 or 16 inchers at best.

I have seen a bunch of these things running around GM Proving Grounds. Rumor has it that GM and Ford are co-developing a hybrid powertrain for muscle cars. There are 2 advantages to this...The first is an electric motor has much more torque than a gas engine so the cars will be quicker off the line and the second is fuel economy. GM and Ford are spooked about the new fuel requirements coming down the line in regards the their muscle cars.

Based on some testing I've witnessed here at Toyota, I wonder if the camo is to disguise small dimples in the sheet metal, similar to a golf ball, to enhance the aerodynamics, for the upcoming fuel rules. Simulation shows that adding sheet metal dimples to a Tundra, would increase fuel economy by 20%.
