Yes, this is theToyota/Subaru coupe you've all been waiting to see. Dubbed the Toyota FT-86, this concept is headed for the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show in a couple of weeks.
We don't have much in the way of details just yet, but our correspondent in Japan says the FT-86 is about what we expected. By that we mean it's most likely based on a modified Subaru Impreza platform that has been converted to rear-wheel drive and is powered by a Subaru-built 2.0-liter flat four. The suspension consists of struts up front and double wishbones in back.
Inside, the FT-86 is configured as a 2+2 which probably makes for a tight cabin given that it's only 164-inches overall, 63-inches wide and 50-inch tall. For comparison, a Honda Civic coupe is 175-inches long, 68.9-inches wide and 55-inches tall.

Basic shape looks unimpressive, the whole package looks smushed, and the details look overwrought. Not quite a fail, but I think the '95 Eagle Talon had more style than this thing.

This looks like distilled from a Nissan GTR! If it wasn't for the Toyota badge, this would be a great Nissan 240...

I like it. My first thought was that it looks strikingly like the Genesis Coupe, but I see some GT-R in there too. I'm hoping for production here - Toyota, give me a reason not to hate you.

I like the idea of this joint venture but I can rattle off 50 things I hope get dropped from the concept. It looks to... gimmicky to me. What's with the strange HVAC vents in the dash and the zippers? does it have a removable dash cover that comes in fun colors? Way over done in my opinion... but most concept cars are that way I guess.
I agree that the Subaru version must be AWD... otherwise they will be jumping the shark. That's what makes them unique. All their car's have standard AWD with little to no weight penalty. If they can just work on the effeciency of the engine and trannies the fuel mileage will be comparable too.
rsholland says:

I see, from the profile, a lot of Mazda RX8.

As others mentioned, I see a lot of GT-R/RX-8 in the profile, but I also get a hint of S2000 on the nose.
The 2.0 Boxer is an odd choice. How much power is that? 170hp? Is there really any point in going RWD with that amount of power? Also, if it's going to be around $25k, I don't even see it being competitive with the Civic Si, let alone the Genesis Coupe, or MS3. Maybe the Subie version will offer the WRX and AWD.

This is way beyond my expectations. It looks great. That engine better be for the base trim, and that price better be for the sports trim!
alman08 says:

very nice design overall... however, this car is small than a Honda Civic coupe, so I guess this could be the next Scion tC, as someone mentioned on here. and what's up with all the zippers inside? lol.

All show and no go? Let's hope not. This is Toyota we're talking about here, so a gutless looker could still be in the cards.

I see a little Genesis, Z, and GT-R in the styling. Not so sure I like the hind quarters, but the rest of the exterior looks pretty sporty.

t10 says:
12:02 PM, 10/ 6/09
Please no AWD from Subie. Low weight and RWD is the key for this car, not another WRX with different styling. A direct injection 2.0 Boxer might get to 200 hp which would be plenty if the car weighs 2700 or 2800 lbs which given its proportions seems not entirely out of the question.
If you add AWD and no turbo engine (and no indications this will get the turbo) then you end up with an R32 type car, heavy, not that great handling, and not that powerful relative to weight.
BTW, this car look brilliant. Interior is even kind of Evora'esque futuristic.
t10 says:
12:05 PM, 10/ 6/09
BTW, one more thing. With the S2000 no more, there is a void to fill in the light sporty coupe niche. I see this going against the Miata and Gen Coupe in many ways given price point and set-up of car.
rsholland says:
12:11 PM, 10/ 6/09
t10,
You want a low weight RWD coupe, buy this Toyota version; but please keep the Subie AWD for those of us who want that feature. Besides, AWD is part of Subaru's DNA.
t10 says:
12:49 PM, 10/ 6/09
holland, so you would buy this @ 3000 - 3100 lbs with 200 hp ? Anyway, doesnt (globally) Suby already offer some FWD cars ? Subaru already has practical and more "compliant" (their words, not mine) cars for Northern (American) climates with snow. If you add AWD then you need turbo. Next thing you know this car costs well over 25K. But as you point out I could always just get the Toyota version if Suby loses focus again. The worst case scenario for Suby fans is AWD with a weak engine,it would be sleek, safe , with no performance.
rsholland says:

Subaru would not being "losing focus." If anything, they would be "staying focused" on who they are, and what made them successful.

with this lackluster, derivative design, and that half assed electric roomba thing (ft-evII) i'd say toyoda has some more apologizing to do.
between a company that once made arguably the best rally car on the market, and a company that made some of the most exciting coupes around, they came up with this? the front end looks like a fat guy gasping for air, the profile looks like they mashed up a gtr, rx7, and genesis coupe and then smoothed it over until it was bland enough to call a yota, and the interior is dressed like the gimp from pulp fiction.
and with a subaru platform and a subaru engine, it sounds to me like toyota is just grasping at straws to get a car out there that gets peoples motors running again.

I like the design. They do need to drop some flamboyant crap but the overall look is striking. Boost it to ~240 horses and with RWD it may grab a lot of young buyers.
f1ndler says:

It doesn't look like a typical Toyota design, however, it reminds me of Nissan and even if it's twice as fast as its competitors it's still an ugly car.

To be honest, I'm more comfortable with this if it's a Celica. To me this is not using enough of the original Hachi-Roku's roots. I know because of the joint venture they used a Subie drivetrain, but that is really too far away from anything to do with the Corolla roots. Just drop a direct injection inline 4 of the same displacement in there. We have to admit that a car cant be but so light weight in this day and time because of extensive and heavy safety standards. The Hachi didnt have these obstacles. Before long you're going to have to start using expensive materials like carbon fiber, extensive use of aluminum, or something crazy like Magnesium wheels. I have to agree with t10 on one point, If they give us 2700 to 2800 pounds and 200 horses, then we're good. Anything more and you HAVE to go with boost. That doesnt say "reborn Hachi" to me at all. If they have to boost it, then call it a Celica ( remember the 3S-GTE turbo of the 4th gen Celica?). But feeling a little tradtional about this car, I think they should have left Subie out of the equation. I love the fact that Subaru has in a nut shell, 2 different drivetrain combinations (flat 4 AWD or flat 6 AWD) and they have a phenominal line up. But I think it should stay that way. If anything, they should let Toyota have this one. Overall it is an eye catcher though. Toyota does need an inspiring car.

^ +1 Weight is key! But you just gotta have a factory turbo option, because this needs torque to be a drift machine.

Looks nice but reminds me of old Isuzu RWD coupe design that went nowhere in bad or snowy weather. However, this coupe suggests drifting delights for fair weather folks.
