Video: Ford's New 6.7-Liter Power Stroke V8 Diesel Might Be Quiet

Ford wants you to know that its new 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8, slated for launch next year in the 2011 F-Series Super Duty and rated at 400 horsepower, is quieter than the current 6.4-liter diesel. So the company made this very short video of the two diesels idling. Unfortunately, the Ford engineer talks right over the 6.7-liter. Which is a good sign, we guess? That's pretty impressive. Clean, quiet, and powerful.

How can two noise levels come from the same engine (with two different displacements)? It looked/sounded to me that the engine was under load, and then put back to idle.

The IH diesels always seemed to me to have the most industrial sound. Kudos to Ford for developing their own modern diesel, I just hope it doesn't have any teething issues once it's released.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the current 6.4 wasn't that loud?

altimadude00,

The difference in the two sounds is created through the use of "pilot injection". Using pilot injection multiple squirts of fuel can be injected during each combustion cycle; injecting a small squirt of fuel early in the cycle softens the combustion sound. So the old diesel sound is without pilot injection, the new diesel sound is with pilot injection.

Glad to see you are starting to use a technology that has been used in production vehicles for over ten years. Now how about bringing over some of the smaller diesels from Europe and putting them in the Ranger, Focus, Escape, Explorer, Taurus and Transit.

It is so depressing that Ford has some great diesel engines in Europe and we get nothing but the crappy, overpriced Powershaft.
