This is a controversial bit of car history. In 1979, Hal Needham, director of Smokey and the Bandit, built this rocket-powered car and got stunt driver Stan Barrett to drive it. They had only one goal: Breaking the sound barrier. And they achieved it. Apparently. The U.S. Air Force confirmed the car hit 739.66 mph on a very cold day at Edwards Air Force base, but this figure was never certified by FIA.
Regardless, the video is worth the watch if you haven't seen it, because, well, it's a rocket car going very, very fast.
