If you had any doubt that Subaru is reaching out to an older, more mature, less enthusiast-minded audience with the redesigned 2010 Subaru Legacy, this commercial should erase that. The "star" expresses hesitation about the hood scoop on his Legacy GT.

Man, Subaru is the biggest sellout of an automaker that I have ever seen. What other company has so quickly abandoned their entire identity just to go after the bland-mobile masses?

With the exception of one very good rally-inspired compact sedan that got milked to death, hasn't Subaru made goofy, ugly, lame-performing cars for their entire history?
YES.
I thought the whole WRX push to bill Subie as a performance brand was shallow at best.

The last Legacy was much better looking (to me). I'm sure, though, that this new car drives very well. It's growing on me a bit. My wife even commented positively on one in pearl white that we saw on the highway this past weekend.

I saw that ad last night. How pathetic. And what a great message:
"If you are a boring dweeb who wants to impress the snot-nosed neighborhood kids, then the new Legacy is your car."

Gotta agree with makakio. The entire subaru line has gotten way too much credit because of one niche vehicle.

Nissan and Mazda, several times each. Fortunately, the process is reversible.

I gotta disagree with most people above me here.
Subaru built the 2010 Legacy to compete with the Accord and Camry. So this commercial is right on with their target audience. Then final line about the hood scoop reminds the viewer that they have that rally background too and you can still have fun in a Legacy GT should you opt for that hood-scoop.
And for all the haters, go take a look at the 2010 legacy and, dare i say, drive it. I'm sure you'll change your attitude

It's far from my cup of tea, but I don't hate the Legacy. I just think the ad is insipid and moronic.

"Man, Subaru is the biggest sellout of an automaker that I have ever seen. What other company has so quickly abandoned their entire identity just to go after the bland-mobile masses?"
Yes, but those bland-mobile masses are also the ones who are contributing to Subarus increase in sales, even during a down economy when all automakers are losing money, struggling to stay afloat or just flat out failing to stay in business and needing the government to takeover control.
As stoppre75 said, the legacy is an alternative to the sales leaders Camry and Accord. It always has been the quirky, different alternative. Still, even though the last generation was one of the best looking cars in the segment it didn't come close to matching the big dogs in sales.
The Forester has always been a quirky alternative to class leaders like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV, but never sold in numbers like them either. Same with the Impreza next to the Civic and Corolla.
Much to the disappointment of diehard Subie fans, they went less quirky and more mainstream to match the competition and sales picked up. I think they are trying to keep the momentum going with the new Legacy and Outback. One thing that should help sales is the improvement in interior space and the improved ride. Also, neither the Camry or Accord offer AWD. Neither offer T/C engines. And best of all, at least they're still quirky enough to offer AWD and a manual gearbox.
To me, there is nothing really wrong with this commercial. But to each his own I guess...

I really like this commercial. And yes, it's meant to appeal to those who are in the market to buy a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. I drove a 2010 Legacy and it was a blast to drive. It had the nice hood scoop too!
By the way, the team who directed this commercial also directed "Little Miss Sunshine".
