Tokyo Preview: Mitsubishi PX-MIEV Concept

Mitsubishi's PX-MiEV looks a bit like the production Outlander SUV, and dimensionally, the two are fairly close (177.5-inch overall length, 103.5-inch wheelbase and 61.5-inch track for the concept). But the PX-MiEV is a plug-in hybrid and in concept bears similarities to production Toyota hybrids and the Subaru's Hybrid Tourer concept.

It has a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine up front, as well as a front-drive electric motor and a rear-drive electric motor. Together, the motors are good for 80 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque, according to Mitsubishi, and together, they effectively create four-wheel drive, albeit in the unconventional, wait-there's-no-center-differential sense. mitsubishi-px-miev-int-det.jpg

Rated at 114 hp and 92 lb-ft of torque, the gas engine can either help drive the front wheels (like a parallel hybrid) or work as a generator (like a series hybrid -- Chevy Volt) to power the electric motors. Its generating capacity is 70 kW, says Mitsu. You can also plug in the PX-MiEV to restore charge to the lithium-ion batteries, and it has the same variable-current charging system as Mitubishi's limited-production i MiEV electric car.

Mitsubishi also makes the interesting observation that when you're not driving the PX-MiEV, you can use its stored electricity to power home appliances -- useful if a storm knocks the power out.

The company claims an overall fuel consumption figure of 50 km/liter (117 mpg), which is probably very theoretical.

More details and photos of the PX-MiEV's cabin after the jump.

Mitsubishi has also stuffed the cabin of the PX-MIEV full of stuff to protect you from the perils of life on Earth. The glass repels UV rays, the upholstery repels allergens, and the climate control system has both a "negative-ion aroma humidifier" and an "oxygen enricher." There's a 360-degree camera system, and the PX-MIEV will monitor roadside beacons, traffic cameras, pedestrians and other vehicles to save you from screwups.

seems kinda lazy...the interior instruments look like a stab at the saab aero-x concept. ...and the paint, and wheels, and the tail lights look like they were remolded off the new 9-5. Aside from a borning interiora nd exterior it has a good......nope, this car is just over all bland

Being that Mitsubishi's concepts tend to follow thru to production pretty much intact, you can bet that the exterior is really close to what we will se on the Outlander replacement. The interior is another thing altogether.

I disagree with 93aero. I see little Saab influence in this. The back lights look sorta like a Hyundai Veracruz to me. The rest looks original enough, except the interior which looks like nearly every concept ever made.

I wish that companies would not waste their money on the flamboyant concept car interiors. They very rarely look anything like that in the production version and I'm sure it costs more to design and produce that then it does to make several top-spec production cars. It just rubs me the wrong way because it seems that Volvo - of all brands - is one of few to actually design the interior like they did in concepts, with the floating center stack.

I agree now that i think of it, its more veracruz..but the pale yellow and red strike me as 2010 9-5

What the Eclipse wasn’t a big enough flop so Mitsu sent a team out to build an unlovable SUV? And the EVO/Lancer was going so well.

Did they take that steering wheel from a Nintendo Wii?
