On the Street With the 2011 Infiniti M56 and M37x

2011-infiniti-m56-sport-act3.jpg

You've seen the computerized pics Infiniti released at the official "virtual" debut of the redesigned 2011 Infiniti M last month at Pebble Beach. But today we spent some time on public roads with an actual rear-drive 2011 Infiniti M56 and an all-wheel-drive 2011 Infiniti M37x.

We can't tell you how these midsize luxury sedans drive or give you detail specs on them today. But browse through the photos and you'll get a feel for how they look on the road and some of the features they have.

For example, the M56, which gets a 5.6-liter V8 making over 400 hp, is available with a sport package, and our particular M56 Sport wore 20-inch wheels and Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires. Navigation system graphics appear to be sharper as well, and the interiors look a little less hard-edge than the current generation.

Although we drove the AWD M37x, there will be certainly be a rear-drive version that slots below that. Look for about 325 hp from its 3.7-liter V6. And expect a 7-speed automatic transmission to be standard on all flavors of the 2011 Infiniti M.

More photos after the jump. Note that the badges are covered on these pre-production cars. The M56 Sport is black with a light interior. The M37x is dark gray with a dark interior.

Looks like an oversized G37. I bet the M56 is fast though!

I don't even know how Infiniti was able to improve upon the current model, but they did. I have loved every design that the m has had.
All I can say is that I can't wait to see it in person. You can tell it fast and the design shows it. Seems like this will always be my favorite car!!!

Wow - the interior looks very plush and luxurious! Especially with the creame leather! ;-)

If only they'd make a G56.

as much as this really looks like an oversized G37, I like it a lot better than the current style.

Very nice! Kudo's!

Love the direction Infiniti's designs have gone and are going. They've somehow managed to avoid the recent trend of shark jumping over at Lexus (LF-A) and Acura (insert Acura car here). The essence concept further signals good things to come.

People like this car, but not the Maxima? Weird.

Looks like a G37 that started pumping iron but also got too keen of beers at night; still, the suit fits well so long as it doesn't weigh higher than 5000lbs -that's the standard in this class right?-

I love it! That bulge on the sides of the hood has sort of became an Infiniti distinction. Love it, love it, love it!!!!!

uhhh....guys n' girls.....it has the same overall shape as the 09 Hyundai Elantra, (seriously....lol...check google images...) just longer...not what I'd want in a luxury car, personally. I really enjoyed the look of the 06+ M...clean lines, understated elegance and power....but with all the bumpiness they added, and rounded rear "buick lacrosse window lines," they made it look like its worth $14,000.

As much as Acura screwed up their new TL's front and rear, it still retains the formidable luxury car look, unlike this....FAIL. :)

At least the new M's interior is an improvement. ;)

Daring new curves in its shape. The new grill is interesting (noted it on the Q56 leaked pics the other day...new family face?). So is the 5.6L just a retuned version of the motor found in the Titan/Armada? The problem with such a curvy design is that it makes normal sized wheels look downright small on it (note the lower V6 pics).

Wow! it looks amazing. I bet that V8 sounds handsome.

jfrenette says:

On the outside, looks like a mix between a Buick and a Genesis... Looks nice inside though

hondacura4 says:

The M's level of perceived quality, overall finish and performance seems to have all been substantially improved.

Then we get to the styling. The nose is fine, but after the B-pillar things just fall apart. There is way too much visual weight as the sheet metal has little surface tension. It just looks fat not athletic and lean like the previous.

1487 says:

Doesn't look that different to me inside or out. It def looks like a fatter G37 though. They needed a more dramatic departure. The upright greenhouse is very stodgy when compared with cars like the XF.

Its a slight improvement over the awkward looking current car, but nothing groundbreaking. The V8 is the best news here. The front end is the worst angle by far.

Like the look overall..What will be the price difference between the G and the M?

fuhteng says:

I just don't like the front of it, but the rest looks nice. With 400+ hp, it is going to move too!

The V8 with 429 HP!

I think it looks fantastic inside and out. Can't wait to see some detailed reviews. This thing looks to be WAY improved over the current M.

atenza94546 says:

Looks better than the last model. At least a bit younger looking both in and out.

To greenpony, Infiniti will not have a G56. The GTR is more like the steroid of the G / Skyline(Jpn) already. Its like why not make a G20 again.

estreka says:

That looks awesome. The luxury market really seems to be developing some style lately (sans Acura).

ewl88 says:

I had the 2006 M which I thought looked good in a conservative way. The midcycle refreshed model 2009 has way too much chrome IMO. (Plus the 2009 had the same engine as the 2006 model!) The 2010 looks like more interesting and aggressive. I hope bottom grill isn't plastic like the current ones. That was a jarring low-rent misstep. We'll see how it looks in person. The current generation M has a perfectly fine interior. There isn't much to improve. (It's the current G [my current car] that could stand improving.)

And the current TL doesn't have a "formidable luxury car look." It just looks WRONG. Esp its backend.

hondacura4 says:

"The current generation M has a perfectly fine interior."

Compared to what? The interior of the current Infiniti M looks low rent and its hasn't aged well at all. It certainly didn't possess the level of finish and sophistication of its German and Japanese rivals.

The M's new interior is much better in terms of perceived quality as it looks like it should be in a mid level luxury sedan.

"So is the 5.6L just a retuned version of the motor found in the Titan/Armada?"

The V8 in the M is from the same engine family as the Titan/Armada but it has received substantial electronic and mechanical upgrades.

when are they going to add the direct injection to the vq37

attackofthepat says:

I agre the new TL looks odd...but I can still see the GRRRRRRR that the new face gives off, and it still has nice creases...altho the new ass does have to go....lol :) the new M just looks like a bubbly econobox. :)

bushwack says:

The car looks OK but I don't see giving up my Lexus GS350 for it (lease expires soon). Nose reminds me of the current Maxima (not a bad thing but at $15,000 less then the 2010 M,...). The taillights are fresh (similar to the new MB E350??). Interior reminds me of a living room from the 1970s although I am glad the instrument panel went to blue from orange. Power trains...you know they'll do the job w/o fuss.
.
All in all OK but not for me. The M does look like a pumped up G37 and for the money, Infiniti doesn't have the snob appeal as a Lexus, BMW 5 series or a MB.

This is the first Infiniti (that I have noticed) which goes away from the traditional oval clock on the center stack. Beautiful vehicle. Love the bulges on the each side of the hood.
