Frankfurt Preview: 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG in the Metal

2011-mb-sls-amg-act-f34-3.jpg

It's amazing what happens when the psychodelic camouflage comes off a long-awaited Mercedes-Benz production car. Here's the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, the reborn Gullwing, the modern-day successor to the 300 SL. We've driven it, savored the uncommonly sharp throttle response from the 6.2-liter V8 (563 hp, 479 lb-ft of torque) and marveled over the handling -- which is more direct and communicative than any other Benz in recent memory.

You'll see the SLS AMG in our 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show coverage next week, but for now, we have many good photos to keep you entertained. Just follow the jump.

The back of the car ruins it for me. I hate the roofline. Otherwise I love it from the front.

I like it. Looks great from all angles. Refreshing design, and the 6.2-3 V-8 should make it move out nicely.

Not a single car on the market I want more than the SLS AMG...now if only I could get the money and trade in my Hyundai.

I'm gonna have to agree with slickersdrip. The front's awesome but from the cockpit rearward it's just kinda like.. bleh. A racing version of this car would probably look insanely cool though.
Anyway, It's still way better-looking than the SLR.

Profile reminds me of a Viper. Sweet car.

I saw the car and I wasn't impressed at first glance. Went through the photos and the back is reminiscent of the Acura CL. The roof and rear window looked like it got pulled out of a Viper. The front looks okay except for the headlights that looked like those of a Nissan Sentra. What is going on? Are the car manufacturers building Frankensteins now a days?

I think I'd rather have the old 1955 300SL Gullwing. I get what the designers were aiming for, just not feeling it. Combine the old 300SL, a GT-R(R35), and the old Viper... I guess this is what it looks like. I almost feel okay that I will never be able to afford one.

efinils2 says:

From the side, this car lacks the presence the SLR McLaren had...and, because of its simplicity, it also highlights its comical proportions...the headlights also look cartoonishly small next to that grill.

roar02ram says:

The front seems fresh, the side looks like a Viper with traces of SLR, and the rear is bland. Very nice, but B+.

nissanfanatic says:

Ditto @ slickesdrip

Agreed @ stillwalking, I also almost feel ok that I cant afford one.

Personally if I had the funds, I would get an AMG SL65 Black Edition over this SLS any day. I like the front end but the further you get towards the rear, the worser it looks. It's artistic but I think this car is probably more appealing to the collector crowd.

Put it next to the original Gullwing, and all the flaws would become more obvious.

Nissan GT-R like headlights, bumper with bazillion ducts that ruins the beautiful grille and looks like some cheesy aftermarket part, LS460 like tailpipes to keep up with the trend, e-bay style tacky carbon fiber trim for center console, forgettable wheel styling and so on.

Looks like they had SLR to begin with, and said 'lets go retro', then put original like front and actual gullwing, then decided to discard the bubble cowl for interior room and safety purposes. And since the cowl is now very rectangular, it didn't seem to flow so well, so they then decided to squish up the trunk a bit so it flows a bit better.

For interior, since halo cars are suppose to have all the features inferior models have (or do they?) they decided to put all the function S-Class has, but since they didn't want to ruin otherwise the nice interior, they decided to throw all the buttons on the center console...

back is ugly and the profile is very much like the Viper. Why do they need this and the SL? The hood on this is WAY too long.

blueguydotcom says:

Is it April 1st already?

relidtm says:

06:10 AM, 09/ 9/09

I don't like it, personally I think the S class and SL look much better, it looks like the Frankenstein of every car that is hot right now..the roof is horrible.

fuhteng says:

06:39 AM, 09/ 9/09

I think that red is a great color, and it is striking, but I don't know if that is a good thing or not. I agree with 1487 that it looks like a Euro-Viper.

zoomzoomn says:

I don't love this car, but I do give MB credit for a clean, modern interpretation of a classic. The interior is especially nice.

bmwboy18 says:

I think most of you guys must be crazy to think that this car looks partailly ugly. I think this is a very unique car and very stylish, a total thumbs up for me! :D I want this car!

mind_ride says:

07:17 AM, 09/ 9/09

The front looks like a Honda S2000 with a big Benz logo. Rear deck lid and tail lights were chopped from the new E-class.

yellowmiata says:

07:33 AM, 09/ 9/09

My is that a beautiful car. It reminds me a wee bit of the Z8 in its edgy yet timeless beauty.

sturgl says:

08:48 AM, 09/ 9/09

What a disaster. I mean, it's tough to design a vehicle with an identity all its own... but really, Mercedes? -immediate reactions were: oh, it's an S2000 (front); wait, no it's a Z4 (side); what the hell? - that's about as ugly a thing as I've seen on a Merc. (rear). Reminiscent of Lexus' SC thingy (rear). If it weren't for the rear and the front and the middle, I'd love this thing.

hcsolo1 says:

08:56 AM, 09/ 9/09

It's beautiful looking! But the back end of the car reminds me of the current Honda Accord Coupe.

stovt001 says:

09:18 AM, 09/ 9/09

This is my new drool-worthy supercar to lust over. As soon as I can get the money together I'm signing up for the AMG driving school that gives seat time in this. It looks great and sounds like it drives just right too.

chavis10 says:

09:22 AM, 09/ 9/09

The profile mimics the BMW Z8, not the Viper.

rallyandbosox says:

09:41 AM, 09/ 9/09

The Z8 mimicked the original 300SL which essentially created the roadster genre...the SLS is an homage to the original.

compliance says:

10:39 AM, 09/ 9/09

There's something off with it. It's not horrible but I think it falls into the bad retro category.

1487 says:

11:38 AM, 09/ 9/09

z8 comparisons make sense- didn't like that either. not a fan of the long hood, short deck look. front engined sports cars look best with hatch type rears

hondapilot2004 says:

11:59 AM, 09/ 9/09

looks like a modern gullwing! This car is PERFECT!

mlh says:

12:22 PM, 09/ 9/09

Rear end looks like an old Acura CL -- not good.

darkman_xxl says:

01:33 PM, 09/ 9/09

I'm sorry...I don't know what some of you are looking at, but this is car has a simple, understated beauty that, unfortuantely, seems to be lost on a lot of other vehicles today. This is a perfect car for a DRIVER! I'd really be hard pressed to decide between a 599 GTB and this car...

sabastian says:

03:57 PM, 09/ 9/09

Beautiful. I also like the fact that it looks really small compared to other supercars. That's a nice change.

estreka says:

05:42 PM, 09/ 9/09

This car stirs me, emotionally.

Erin, I'm so intensely jealous I can't even put it into words.

eric808 says:

08:00 PM, 09/ 9/09

What a waste of time and money. Mercedes should've put time to make the car look as good instead of going the other way around.

mito says:

08:45 PM, 09/ 9/09

It looks like a Viper.

danntheemann says:

09:00 PM, 09/ 9/09

refreshing design, unique, and obviously a technological achievement....but these exterior photos do not live up to my expectations. the front lights are awkward and the grill/intakes seem overdone. Love the interior however

billt9 says:

07:23 AM, 09/10/09

looks great. looks like a next next gen Dodge viper. It's what the viper should have became.

mafff says:

08:49 PM, 09/14/09

unequivocally horrid... *schlong* cars are out right?!?!!
