Honda is working on a dual-clutch transmission, and it will reportedly debut on the 2010 VFR1200. Honda's planning to call it HDCT (Honda Dual Clutch Transmission). You can see how it works in the video above. Thanks to Bob Holland for the tip.

A DSG will almost certainly enable competent riders to ride better, but I think that an unintended consequence could be that more posers and incompetents will become riders because bikes will be "easier" to ride. If that's the case, we can only hope that the process of natural selection operates at a high level of efficiency.

I agree to some extent with roadburner. But the VFR is a niche bike and is generally Honda's test mule for new-to-market technology. As such, it's already pricey and this will just drive the cost up further making it an unlikely choice for posers and squids. It's not the fastest or most powerful bike on the road - those can be had for a lot less dough. A current VFR will run you $11,999 with a 782cc V-4 engine. A Suzuki GSX-R750 is $11,699 and is faster and more powerful than the Honda - and is often seen under posers and squids (as well as more responsible, experienced riders).

Pose pose! Squid squid! Ah, the elitists are hard at work today.
Ultimately, this is technology making our rides better. Which is a good thing. Next stop, flying motorcycles. Should be 2011 by my estimation.

eclogite,
Good points. I wasn't referring so much to the VFR as to future implementation to more popular bikes such as metric cruisers.

dreston,
If by "elitist" you mean someone who works at improving-and takes pride in-their riding skills, then I am guilty as charged. And I realize that in doing so I represent a tiny percentage of the motorcycling community.

I'm a fan of natural selection but I think this is a long shot.

Yes, but I can dream, can't I?

A dual-clutch on a metric cruiser...urgh. That's a disturbing thought...
