Consumer Reports has just published its own muscle car comparison test involving a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS, a Dodge Challenger R/T and a 2010 Ford Mustang GT, and the Mustang came away the winner with 78 points and a "Very Good" rating.
"The Mustang topped this group by delivering strong acceleration, communicative steering, and the most agile handling," said David Champion, senior director of CR's Auto Test Center.
The second-place Camaro evidently lost a few points for its cheap interior plastics, but was also rated Very Good with 71 points. The Dodge Challenger was third with 58 points and a lower "Good" rating. CR liked the Dodge's retro style and the sound and feel of its V8, but couldn't warm to its big-car feel, nor the mediocre brakings numbers the test crew apparently achieved.
If you read Inside Line's test of these three muscle cars, you'll remember that the Camaro won this test because, well, it had the most motor. Make the Mustang a Shelby GT500, though, and we get all enthusiastic about the Ford, too.

Not surprising because the Mustang has better visibility and a lower curb weight. CR rates cars on practicality and the Ford wins there.

The previous generation Camero and Firebird always seems appealing in the ebstract. But whenever I sat in one at an auto show I felt like I was sitting in a dark bathtub.
My '87 Mustang felt airy by comparison. I'm afraid that the the high beltline and gunclit windshield will give the Camero the same feel as the last gen.
Even with less power and a less sophsticated suspension, I'll take the Mustang.

'Car & Driver' reached the same conclusion without the same set of priorities. Although the editors evinced surprise when they added up the points.

I think you're a winner no matter which you choose. Each car appeals to a different aspect of the market.

Mustang and Camaro are pretty evenly matched if you want the V8.
If you want to evaluate cars on track performance (like C&D) the Mustang is still going to win. Its lighter, has better sightlines and sharper reflexes with the track package. Most buyers arent getting these cars to tackle the track though and thus the Camaro is selling well so far.

The classic mustang camaro fight continues! My 87 mustang feels airy too...especially with the top down

Man I need to watch my spelling better.
I will spell Camaro correctly
I will spell Camaro correctly
I will spell Camaro correctly
Especially when the correct spelling is in the article right above where I'm typing!

For once I agree with CR. And when it comes to the big three, my loyalty is usually with GM.

I agree with altimadude00 - you're a winner with any of these cars. I'm jealous of you if you're in the market for one.

R&T also picked the Mustang in this month's issue. The others seem to lack the sharper feel of the Mustang.

cars.com picked Mustang also.
The Camaro is an ergonomic and visibility nightmare and doesn't handle better, or provide more interior space than the Mustang apparently.
So just about everybody picked the Mustang.

I'm wondering how many people complaining about the Camaro's visibility and steering wheel have actually sat in the car, held the wheel, and looked out. I have, and I really don't see where the deal-breaking problem is. Visibility is perhaps slightly worse than your average coupe, but that was in no way my main take-away from the experience. It didn't seem like it would pose much of a functionality issue to me at all, but I'm coming from another coupe so maybe I'm just used to it. The wheel fit just fine, and my hands, while small, are otherwise completely normal. The plastics weren't soft, but they certainly felt very durable. It is only a problem if the only criteria you have for good materials is "soft".

Consumers are chosing camaro and that is what matters. Anyone with common sense knows such a rakish design offers compromises. People are chosing style over function. Not surprising in this segment. They sold over 8500 last month. Car magazines are rating sportiness first and foremost. The lighter mustang handles better as long as it has the track pack. Of course most Mustnags wont have that so its anyone's guess how a regular GT will stack up vs the SS.

stovt001,
While the Camaro's interior is not bad. The Mustang's is nicer and a bit more ergonomic. The Mustang has a better trunk and better visibility. Overall, you're making less compromises, which is especially important to those interested in the lower end models.
1487,
Consumers are choosing the Camaro because it's new. Once the novelty wears off (or the Mustang's new engines arrive), people will go back to the Mustang.

This is kind of funny since edmunds rated the base versions of these cars, where the camaro won. I like the camaro too, it looks better, I've always wanted one (glad it's back), it has a direct injection engine (the only one w/ this option), which is verryyy good for performance and efficiency.
It depends all what youre looking at. Personally I think all of them are great.

Once the "Coyote" engine finally makes it to market, Mustang will have an even greater advantage and will literally sell like hotcakes.

Mustang is new for 2010. Didn't you hear? In future years Camaro will get more options and a convertible. Dont count on people going back to Mustang. There is even the possibility of a version with the 2L turbo for even better mileage.

The base mustang V6 is a major compromise in my book.

I have sat in one and usually can forgive a lot in a car, but the interior is a joke, hard plastics and very cheap looking. another thing about the Camaro is that you can't even get a Nav, and while I don't use mine everyday it gives the interior a upscale look and is nice on vacation to find everything I need, without having to remove a portable nav everytime I park. I'm a Mopar guy but even I will admit the Mustang is the right choice.

The Challenger would be my choice. I drive a lot of highway miles and I like the look and the thought of effortless travel. What gives me pause is the visibility and the hugeness of the things going down the road. They do look a bit porky.
The Camaro would not be a bad choice but the thought of getting an SS with 6th speed all i would be thinking about is the tranny exploding.
The Ford is good looking as well but the choppy ride would get tired.
Now if we could get the Challengers looks, Mustangs size and tranny and the Camaros power we would have a superstar.
