BMW Says All Future Diesel Models for U.S. Will Be All-Wheel Drive

jim-odonnell-bmwna-ceo-blog.jpg

Inside Line spoke with Jim O'Donnell, CEO of BMW North America, today and learned that all future diesel models the company brings to the U.S. will be all-wheel drive.

That likely means the BMW 335d's days are numbered. There's already a diesel version of the X5. At minimum, we'll expect to see a diesel X3.

And the likelihood of any other 3xxd sedan diminishes... Humbug.

That stinks. Diesels are more practical in warm climates, while AWD makes more sense in cold climates. I would consider paying a bit extra for one of BMW's excellent diesel engines, but I live in Georgia and wouldn't pay even more to add unnecessary AWD.

The 335d is an awesome car, the only thing that killed it is the price. That's a real shame.

Honestly, BMW should be giving us the 2.0L diesel for the 3 series. That would prove alot more appealing and offer really good mpg.

I'll take a diesel 1er with the M Sport package.

How about a 320d like they sell everywhere else in the world? Honest 40-mpg, 0-60 in under 8 seconds, six-speed manual, RWD chassis...

That's ridiculous.

Maybe if they offered the 335d with a stick we'd be talking. I can't imagine anyone but enthusiasts would be willing to try the diesel anyway, then you can't get it with a stick. Image conscious luxury buyers who get automatics are not the type of people that would take a chance on a diesel.

So now they're adding AWD ONLY? This is a BMW right? Again, enthusiasts want RWD.

So instead of RWD+stick we get AWD+AUTO?

BMW needs to get back to basics a bit.

Maybe BMW will offer the 3 with diesel and AWD. Like the wagon..

"Maybe if they offered the 335d with a stick we'd be talking."

I agree- but the reason Munich fits the 335d with a slushbox is because they don't have a manual transmission that can handle the oil burner's torque.

Ugh! BMW, we need RWD, 2.0L, manual transmission turbo diesels in the 1 and 3 series! Please!

greenpony says:

I don't believe it. Maybe at first, in their SUVs, but diesel is the best option available to BMW at this moment to meet the new CAFE requirements.

maybe just drop us the 123d?

That seems like a dumb and arbitrary decision.

The 335d should have also come in in the coupe, in which case, I would have been much more interested. The four door sedan just isn't as attractive.

magbarn says:

YEs BMW! Instead of giving us highly fuel efficient diesels with ranging from adequate to insane, you're going to give us torqueless, high-revving 4 bangers instead in your increasingly heavy cars.

BMW is busy coming out with niche (ugly) cars like the X6 and 5 series GT, and expanding its SUV lineup, yet figures that 2WD, manuals and diesel are incompatible (a combination that VW happily offers). Seems like a decision driven mainly by marketing focus group research guys and the cost accountants. Does that remind you of Detroit management? Unfortunately, except for the M division, BMW seems to be led by fewer and fewer car guys.

estreka says:

That'll make it awfully pricy. Plus you negate much of the diesel's cost benefits.
