Audi R8 V10 Road Trip: It Was Bound To Happen, Right?

cop shot 950.jpg

It shouldn't really come as too much of a surprise that we'd see this in the rear-view mirror at some point on this trip. The real surprise is that it didn't happen until the second day. We were heading East on highway 299 away from the coast.

It's a pleasant wooded drive with big smooth sweepers that, in the R8 V10, can easily be negotiated at speeds well above our comfort level (and nearly three times the speed limit).

We were doing a blameless 5 mph over the limit when we arrived at the top of a crest to see this gentleman's car on the side of the road. Soon enough, the lights go on and we ease into a turnout.

He didn't seem to care one whit about the car. "Oooh, that's not good," we thought. That was the only card we had to play. But it turns out that doing only 5 mph over the speed limit, even with a construction zone a few miles up ahead, is not really enough to justify a speeding ticket. Luckily, our man in uniform agreed, eventually.

Also, lucky for us, was that he wasn't stationed a few miles earlier on that road.

As much as I love the R8, it's jailbait for sure. ;)

5 MPH over? Really... that's it? I've had the fortune that the one time I've been pulled over, it was for a very legitimate reason (something like 20-25 over... but long story...). If I am, for whatever reason, speeding excessively or breaking some clear-cut law I have no problem nor anger in being pulled over.

I have a fear that if someone pulled me over going 5 MPH over, I don't think I could keep myself from strangling the cop for wasting my time over something so trivial (of course, he/she would agree with me and let me head on my way... naturally...).

I was doing 20 over once, coming up over a hill. 85 in a 65. I knew I was dead. But no, he gave me a warning. I've never cruised at any more than 7 over since, and I usually only cruise at 2-3 over anymore.

I will however get up to triple-digits when I can see and I have my radar detector on...

He stops you for going 5 MPH over the limit?
Must be a REAL slow day for him.....

I guess so many people only do a menial 5-10 over that cops are coming up with all kinds of tricks nowadays to catch the habitual high rollers.
* Hiding on on-ramps to catch the cars going past. When was the last time you looked over at the on-ramp? Exactly...
* Hiding on overpasses then radioing ahead to a waiting patrol car.
* Hiding behind trees on the other side of the median so you can't see them when you go past. This has the double effect of slowing down traffic on the other side too.
* Using non-traditional unmarked cars.
* Using non-traditional patrol cars.

I don't drive very fast anymore -- well, okay, not as much as before. But when I do, my fingers always tap the "cancel" button on the cruise when I see a Ford Crown Vic or Dodge Charger. Those Chargers are very cool-looking patrol cars, too.

Sorry for the off-topic ranting.

drive in Boston. traffic rules are mere suggestions to most people. that means most cops are too lazy to pull you over unless you are doing more than 80 in a 55. did you know that those turning left have the right-of-way over those going straight (in the opposite direction) when the light turns green (not green turn arrow)? love it.

i hate it when roads are patrolled by aircraft (never personally caught, but knew too many who have in MO and Canada). that's when radars and keen eyes probably are worthless.

I got pulled over by an unmarked Charger doing 75 in a 70 right outside of Des Moines last month. He gave me a warning so I kept quiet but I'm assuming my out-of-state tag was the real reason I was targeted since the traffic flow was moving much faster.

I saw an R8 on the college campus today. It was parked in a reserve spot for administration muck-a-mucks. Now I know where my tuition money is going.

Only 5mph over and he pulled you? What a %@#$!!! 10mph, OK. 15, definitely. 5mph? Yet another reason that I am glad not to be in Cali.

the_big_al says:

wow only 5 over... and i thought my 10 over (65 in a 55) was barley pushing the envelope. Especially since the road I was on although curvy and windy, can easily be negotiated at about 70 in your typical passenger vehicle. An car like the R8 would probably be able to do this road at triple digits... even the yellow signed 45 mph corners.

brn says:

He was fishing. He didn't find what he was looking for, so he let you go. No cop is going to ticket for five over.

True. A cool cop would have asked you to let her rip to see if he had a prayer of keeping up! :)

My theory: He heard you approaching from a distance. That V10 sounds great and it carries for quite a distance. I was pulled over once in the Rock Store area of Mullholland. The officer admitted he did not catch me speeding, but let me know that he heard my engine from quite a ways off. I was, in fact, travelling at a brisk pace (before my hiring at edmunds).

He was very cool about the whole thing. Ran my license, asked about the car, joked around a bit then let me go. I suppose it also helps that I treat all officers with respect, since most truly deserve it.

What, no V1 or Escort? There are more than a few of these kicking around based on previous posts, so I'm a bit surprised to see the R8 rolling without one.

Good to know the COPS have NOTHING to do in that town. Sounds like a good place to hang out.

@sgude,

I do look at on-ramps for cops. Shadows near overpasses. Trees. Guess I'm paranoid.

stovt001 says:

I got pulled over for 5 over once. When I protested, the cop said the safe speed was lower since it was raining. I pointed out it was not raining and right on cue, the clouds opened up. Apparently it doesn't have to be raining before the cop pulls you over, just before he writes the ticket.

stovt001 says:

I also look at on-ramps for cops. And, if I do say so myself, I'm very good at picking out unmarked patrol cars.

mustang5507 says:

5 over...ouch. I always thought 10+ was the rule. Psh I saw a Pontiac G5 speed past a chipper doing about 80. No lights, wasn't even followed. It's hard to tell these days.

clarkma5 says:

It's these sorts of experiences that, sadly, make me fear cops. I don't want to but I really can't help it, I've been badgered and/or let down by cops on too many occasions. That said, the only time I got pulled over was for him catching me doing 79 in a 55 (he caught me at the very peak, I was accelerating from a small side road to a major highway on a blind corner and I didn't want to dilly-dally, kept my foot in it and I was doing 80 when I thought I was doing about 68, and then the lights came from nowhere). Anyway, I got out of that with a warning but he was still a tool about it...

ive gone anywhere from 5 mph to do i even have to say it over the limit... and ive never been caught as of yet...

clarkma... ive done somethig similar to that... jumped a railroad crossing in my car... thought it was doing 50... was really climbing over 65... almost broke it... whoops!

@sgude:

If you want to hear about sneaky, in Leander (the suburb I live in of Austin, TX) by my neighborhood there's a median with rocks there for decoration. A cop will squat behind them with a radar gun and radios ahead for the cop about 25 feet down the road on a motorcycle or Tahoe cop car will take you down. It's never worth speeding around here.

On Duval road here in Austin, for the exit from highway 183, there's usually a cop sitting there at the bottom of it to catch people who haven't gone from 65 mph to 55 mph by the time they're off the ramp. What's so sneaky about that is that right by there is the Ford, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Saturn, BGP etc. dealerships, so people testing out their new cars are dead meat. A friend of mine got a speeding ticket while test driving his Trailblazer SS.

@altimadude:

If you want to feel better, I go to UT and last semester I saw an SLR Roadster parked outside the main Tower. Top down, no one watching it. The people at UT were just walking buy it without a glance. I stopped and stared and walked around it for about 15 minutes.

church123 says:

I hear you on Austin, slickersdrip. The Hill Country around Austin is particularly bad. My in-laws live out there and when we first went to visit I was told to keep it _at_ the speed limit or lower. I didn't listen and it wasn't 24 hours before I got pulled over for doing 4 mph above the limit. If it wasn't for the fact I was with a local I'm pretty sure I would have gotten a ticket.

slickersdrip says:

06:28 PM, 09/ 2/09

Yeah, I'm up here in Hill Country it's really bad. When I was growing up living in Florida I would drive 77 in the 70 zones, 88 in the 80 zones, and would keep with traffic at whatever speed going up and down I-95. It wasn't a month I was here and I got puled over for not having a front plate on my SRT-4. I didn't even have the bracket. The cop let me off with the warning rather than the $100+ ticket based on the fact that we had the same birthday and last name. After that I put on the front plate and don't speed at all here. When I was in Pasadena in 2007 extra legal speeds were the norm. It was a nice few months of a change...

I was cruising down the byways out by Dripping Springs and a cop had apparently driven up behind me with his lights completely off (around midnight). Suddenly there was a blinding disco inferno of light right on my bumper.

Those guys are dangerous sometimes.

How often do you editors get pulled over and how often do you get tickets? Do you ever get let off the hook because you work for edmunds? I have always wondered this.
