UPDATED
The news that Honda will build its new crossover at its East Liberty, Ohio, plant comes as no surprise, really, given that the 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour will be sold exclusively in North America.
Hidenobu Iwata, president and CEO of Honda of America Manufacturing, made the announcement today during a tree-planting ceremony to commemorate the 30 years Honda has been building cars in the U.S.
Engines for the Crosstour will come from Honda's nearby Anna, Ohio, engine plant. Presumably, those will be the familiar 2.4-liter inline-4 and 3.5-liter V6. The press release also says, "Honda's transmission plant near Russells Point, Ohio, will be the production site for its automatic transmission." Undoubtedly, that's a reference to the company's five-speed automatic, and we take this to mean that it's unlikely a manual gearbox will be offered in the Crosstour, even with a base four-cylinder engine.
There's also this line: "Going on sale this fall, the Accord Crosstour will be positioned at the top of the Accord lineup." Given that the 2010 Honda Accord sedan and coupe pricing ranges from $21K to $31K, we'd guess the Accord Crosstour will have a starting price around $25K. With a V6, we'd guess it would move up to around $30K.
Feel free to tell us what you think of our extremely guesstimated predictions.

I fully understand the overall concept and mission of a vehicle of this nature but why oh why does it have to be so damn ugly?

I expect that the Real-Time 4WD; and not the SH-AWD, found on Acuras; to be offered.
Why? Because the badge on the rear hatch says "4WD," not "SH-AWD."
I'm hoping Edmunds will do a comparison test between this, the Venza, and the all-new Outback.

@rsholland: I agree with you, Bob. I'd think Honda will be trying to keep the price down as much as possible in order to assure good parity with the Venza and Outback. And your comparison test request is duly noted. -- Erin

Maybe i'm crazy, but I don't think it looks that bad. I think it actually looks good. At least in the pictures, maybe the proportions will be strange in the metal, but I think it looks good. Sort of like a more sporty Toyota Venza, which i also think is sorta cool.
Maybe I'm lame then?

Ummm, Honda has been building cars in the US since 1982 in Marysville, OH, "exactly" 27 years ago by my arithmetic. The East Liberty plant started production in 1989, making it 20 years old, not 30, unless there's been a time warp.

Not bad. Certainly better than those godawful truck-based SUVs that clog up the streets.

Uh...Honda dropped the ball. This makes little sense. It doesn't really add utility because of that awkward ZDX-esque slopping roof. It's just a raised Accord. On steriods.
I do agree that this and the Outback compete. I also think that between the three (Venza included) the Outback is a winner. Im not completely sold on the front end styling, but the inside can't be beat, and theres so much room in the back seat. It also looks good from the rear 3/4 view.

Please bring the Euro Accord Tourer to North America. Don't change the styling.
For those who like the Crosstour or need AWD, fine, buy a Crosstour. I'll take the Accord Tourer please.

The Venza has the sex appeal of Giselle compared to this flop. I don't see how it even compares. The Venza looks a lot more practical.
Why not just make an Accord wagon? Because that would be too good looking?
Let me get this straight... it's going to cost MORE than a Accord sedan... so now UGLY is being sold by the pound at Honda.

This thing looks like the long lost sibling of the 2010 Ford Taurus...the 2010 Honda Taurus wagon!

us americans wont buy wagons, but we'll buy this?? tell me how is this more efficient than a traditional wagon and what is now a conventional crossover? It doesn't look to have anything over a typical sedan except a higher ride height... almost as pointless as an X6

This is the best angle/shot of this thing yet, IMO.

this thing is doom for american production and jobs. it's gonna make Ohio lose jobs cuz people don't want to buy this so incredibly ugly what the hell is it.

For starters, the Accord is NOT built in East Liberty. The Accord is built in Marysville, OH, alongside the Acura TL and RDX. The East Liberty plant produces the CR-V and Element. I know this because I know someone who builds Accords in Marysville, and I own a Marysville-built Accord from 1994.
Anywho, I agree it's not a good looking car, but there have been plenty of other "ugly" cars that have been best-sellers. Like, the Camry, Corolla, '96-'99 Taurus, among others.
Ugly cars seem to be an epidemic. Most everything out of Toyota, BMW, Acura, Mercedes, Lexus and others the past few years have been unspeakably ugly. Yet they still sell cars. There's a market for this thing, and if not, they won't make it anymore. Simple as that.

Is it just me or does the squared off rear bumper resemble that of a Dodge Caliber (especially in the lighter color schemes)? Definitely NOT a favorable reference. Overall it looks like the front and rear overhangs are huge and it's just not a cohesive design. As a Honda owner (1st gen Fit) and fan, I'm truly disappointed with Honda/Acura's latest efforts. They definitely don't have me interested.

@bc1960, 94accord_lover: You're both absolutely right, of course, and I've edited the entry to reflect correct information (which is why it now says "Updated" at the top). It's always unfortunate when blog editors get careless with facts. --E. Riches
