We've known for some time that there would be an electric version of Benz's new Gullwing, and today in Frankfurt, Inside Line learned more details about the Mercedes-Benz SLS Electric. Mercedes now plans to put it into production "after 2011" -- sooner than the MY2015 launch we'd reported earlier.
The company is still committed to delivering 526 hp and 649 lb-ft of torque via four electric motors built into the car's axles paired with a transmission at either end. Maximum speed is 150 mph -- 25 more than the Audi e-Tron -- and Benz officials still say the electric SLS will hit 60 mph in under 4 seconds. Claimed driving range is 154 miles.
Having the right batteries will be critical to such feats, obviously, and we learned today that the rear-mounted 400-volt, 48-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack will be manufactured by Evonik.

I think it's a bad idea. Use the SLR instead. Nobody buys those.
