Nissan Scrambling to Determine Future of Titan Pickup

titan-555.jpg

According to a report in Automotive News, Nissan is looking at several different scenarios for its next-generation Titan full-size truck.

Nissan had a deal with Chrysler to build restyled versions of its Ram pickup in its Saltillo, Mexico plant, but the recent takeover by Fiat has thrown that into limbo. Nissan is now looking at agreements with other automakers, but the prospects are slim.

Another possibility is for Nissan to simply refresh the current model and continue producing the truck in its own plant.

"Another possibility is for Nissan to simply refresh the current model and continue producing the truck in its own plant."

Precisely.

Yeah, I too hope that's the route they pursue. Keep it 100% Nissan, and not just another badge-engineered vehicle.

Ditto - build on what has been an impressive first attempt. Correct issues, add more configurations and drivetrain options this time around.

Does Nissan sell many of these in the States? Here in British Columbia I really can't remember the last time I saw one.

You still see lots of beat up Nissan trucks from the 90's but no Titans.

Maybe they should go back to compact trucks.

I hope they keep it around, I really like it.

Tone down that wacky styling and give it a 1/2 ton diesel. It will fly out of lots!

I like the Titan a lot, but if they need to come up with a re-badged one,

If Penske's Saturn indeed has a deal to bring over rebadged Nissans, then Saturn could possibly work out a deal with GM to rebadge a GMT900 for Nissan.

I like the styling as well on these trucks. A restyle and maybe more customizable(?) option roster to make it more competitive against the other full sizers would be great.

really the mechanicals of the truck are solid... give it some new sheet metal, an improved interior and massage the powertrain for more power but better fuel effeciency and they can keep it competitive. The big thing that's hurting them is not having a regular cab long bed for commercial applications.

Another vote for all Nissan.

The biggest problem with the Titan was the extreme fast-tracking of the Canton plant and the alpha trucks. It resulted in tragically poor quality control.

Unfortunately, it has a very widespread and terrible rep. Nissan has a long uphill climb to restore confidence, but that would happen anyway.

Titan is a great truck! I hope they keep it! It was the king of fullsize trucks for a few years. I think the then new Silvarado knocked it off its feet then the Tundra mauled over. But then again, from 2003 to 2007 is pretty good.

Keep the engine, upgrade the brakes, change the styling, offer diesel option, and you have a winner without much work.

Hey, Nissan failed terribly. Exit the segment Nissan with your tail between your legs. You can buy all the media praise you want, but that doesnt change the fact that nobody wants your crappy pick up.

Yes, the early trucks had some issues. Most notably the horribly inadequate brakes. The trucks, though, have been ever improving since then. The past few model years are very good vehicles. Sadly, alot of consumer confidence was lost. Additionally, Nissan really has not been supporting this model or the Armada. Seems economics and the ever present and stiffening of higher CAFE regs might be playing a part here.

The question is not a matter of whether this should be a Nissan. It definitely should! However, will Nissan be willing to make the investment to relaunch a next generation iteration? As an '08 Armada owner I certainly hope so, but it just may not fit their future portfolio.

it just needs some mpgs man.
the Titan is the most fuel guzzling full size truck on the market.
It needs to catch up on mpgs and ditch the power.

It took Toyota 3 iterations to get the Tundra to where it is. Nissan hit the ground running - compare it to the T-100 or first gen Tundra. Nissan should give the Titan an equal chance. A redo built upon this current solid foundation would be very competitive IMO.

Here's where the original Titan messed up:

not enough configurations
not enough engines
truly terrible ride quality
goofy styling

If they fix those, just like the Tundra, they can slowly claw back into the game. They're already off to a good start with the long box for ext. and crew cabs, but it's still simply not versatile enough.

Nissan needs to keep the Titan. They did some updates for the 07 model and up to correct the quality problems.

There are several things they can upgrade and get a good truck at the end.

indianajoel says:

They should redesign it and build it at the old Toyota/GM NUMMI plant in Fremont Ca.

windsor5 says:

Nissan will probably kill this truck if they cant get the dodge rebadge for several reasons already listed above.

They simply just are not interested in more R&D for this vehicle that flopped on them. Great Truck but had to many quality control problems
which seem to have been plaguing nissans lately
