New Jay Leno Show To Feature Celebrity Car Races

lenoshow.jpg Jay Leno revealed the format of his new primetime show yesterday, and it looks like he's borrowing a page from Top Gear to mix things up a little.

According to a report from the Live Feed, Leno's show will feature a segment called "Green Car Challenge" that will pit celebrities against each other in alternative fuel vehicles. "You can see who is faster, Shaquille O'Neal or Cameron Diaz," Leno said.

Sounds sort of interesting, although the same report also said that NBC built a test track outside the studio for the segment, so don't expect anything much more than a big parking lot with a few K-rail barriers. We'll see this fall.

Continuing a career-long record of mediocrity and appropriation of other people's ideas...

Why the continuing series of cheap shots against Jay?

I think Jay would be the high point of what will likely be a lame show.

Green car challenge? Ugh.

What's his next idea; Wiffle Ball Home Run Derby?

@first,

I detest him. He's got zero serious opinions, instead always taking the middle ground so as not to offend anyone on any topic at any time. He's so milquetoast as a comedian and so-called car aficionado that listening to him discuss automobiles is like listening to a kindergarten teacher discuss the merits of all of her students with them listening.

He rarely, if ever, levels a criticism at anything. Like his "comedy" he takes the middle ground on every topic in a sad attempt to appeal to most people and not offend anyone.

Essentially he represents nothing and offends no one purposely, thus making him, in my eyes, one of the most offensive media "personalities" around. He's Mr. Rogers but the media gives him car cred because he owns many cars.

Is this was was going to be American Top Gear?

Firstwagon, BGDC hasn't posted anything on Edmunds in months that isn't some petty, bitter rant against someone he has a grudge against. I just skip over his posts now. They all say the exact same thing.

Anyway, back on topic. "Green car challenge". Now that sounds like a thrill-a-minute. I'll stick with Top Gear thanks.

Wow, such hatred for an actual nice guy in Hollywood. I have met Jay a couple of times, once by the comedy and magic club thats in Hermosa Beach, I think. I was walking back to our car while my wife waited to see if we could get tickets. As I was crossing a street jay pulled up in his Corvette Z06 and waved me across. When he pulled up to the comedy club my wife called me and said he pulled up and we got tickets. I was about 10 minutes away and Jay actually waited with my wife because she told him I wanted to meet him. He didn't have to do that and could have just walked in without caring, I for one am looking forward to his new show, although I wish it was not a "green car challenge".

I'll take Leno over Clarkson any day.

Clarkson has a personality and opinions.

FWIW, my parents have met with Jay many times at various car shows (they attend the same silly events). They rave about how nice he is. Great. He's a nice guy. Doesn't make him interesting.

Then don't watch the show, but don't knock the guy because he is nice. Don't get me wrong, I like the Eddie Murphy's of the world but it's kind of refreshing to watch an old school comedian that doesn't need to swear or shock to get a laugh.

jeep, if he were funny I'd agree. Just find him milquetoast. Worse, I believe he does it to purposely appeal to the widest group, like he's sublimating himself. In the late 80s he was sharper. As he moved closer to taking out Carson his comedy morphed and he began taking the easy, generic laugh that's kid test, mother approved and sure not to rile up anyone.

"Clarkson has a personality and opinions."

So does Leno. So do you. So do I.

Yes, Clarkson is entertaining. My problem is he makes stuff up to prove whatever he feels like proving. My bigger problem is that people buy into it.

Everyone knows Clarkson makes stuff up and is full of himself. That's part of his character and the act he does. He often admits he has no idea what he talking about and many of the things they do are set up to make fun of his "over the top" personality. (Did you see the clip of "Clarkson Island"?) I think he's great, he's created one of the funniest car shows ever.

I like Jay too. He's a nice guy that you'd hang out with and have a few beers without ever feeling like having a big argument about nothing.

Clarkson is more entertaining though.

Jay's car race show might be good but I'll bet the green spin ruins it.

This might be the first idea he didnt steal from the Stern Show

blueguydotcom says:

carswapper, give him time, he'll probably have an inebriated little person drive the car and call him "Henry the Angry Drunken"...
