Is This Plymouth Superbird Worth $3M?

superbirdlatimes-555.jpg

In a word? No. In two words? No way.

And why does a certain Mr. Brian Chaffee think his 1970 Plymouth Superbird is worth such a lofty price? Well, according to the Los Angeles Times the car has been meticulously restored, a process that Mr. Chaffee said took three years of research and work to complete.

Still don't think it's worth $3M?

Also consider the fact that this very car was used as an emissions test bed in the 70s to make the case for banning leaded fuel and asbestos brake pads. Now that's what they call provenance folks.

L.A. Times: Could this be a $3-million car?

Still not $3MM, but worth more than the average fully-restored Superbird for sure. Maybe twice as much.

I never thought those cars looked right, particularly since that front end was clearly grafted on for racing homologation - NASCAR?, or whatever it was called back then.

Like all used cars it's worth whatever someone will pay for it.

If he can find someone that will pay $3 Mill then it's worth it.

I'd be surprised if anyone pays over a $250,000 these days though.

felonious, you're an accountant aren't you. Those seem to be the only people who use "M" to mean thousand and "MM" to mean million. Those of us with scientific/computer backgrounds (like Ed, apparently) use "K" and "M", respectively, instead.

I'd give the owner of this car $4500 ($4.5K) for a clunker trade in.

Give this car to Geely in China and pay them $1.5MM USD and they can do a replica and they can pump out 3MM units of it. Even if this is the last one on Earth still don't worth $3MM. But, wait maybe it worth ¥3MM.

No more than one million.

Polishing a turd, doesn't change the fact that it's a turd. This car is worth $3500 on a clunker trade. People need to realize that old and rare doesn't mean good. All these old American cars that people over pay so much on are junk.

What's with the gizmo antenna's on the front fenders. I don't recall either one looking like the original equipment Chrysler antenna. Regardless, 3 mil... uh... I'll take the mansion on the lake, L88 Corvette, Shelby Cobra and fully stocked IRA instead. But, to each his own.

I don't even want it for free. I feel embarrassed driving this thing on the steet.

I still remember that dealers got stuck with these cars in their showrooms because no one would buy them. They looked stupid in 1970 and still do. Plymouth parked a yellow one in the parking lot at Daytona in 1970 and it drew no lookers. However, given the recent frenzy in the muscle car market, I wouldn't be surprised that someone with more money than brains would pay that amount.
