Starting in October, you're going to see an Inside Line that makes the current site look like an Atari game. A wider format, giant photos and easier navigation are just a few of the benefits the new site will offer. In the coming weeks we'll be giving you some sneak peeks of the new site to give you an idea of what to expect.
Among the many improvements you'll see is an improved search function. We're not ignorant of the fact that our current search box isn't all that helpful. In fact, it's quite clear to us that it barely works at all.
Help is on the way, however, as the redesign will not only feature a more prominent search box on every page, it will generate a far more useful results page.
As you can see above, you'll get all the results initially, but you'll also be able to filter the links by clicking the tabs across the top or the drop down box above the tabs. All of the options are designed to quickly deliver the results you want with a minimum number of extra clicks.

and of course an 'edit' function?

EDIT function is just as important as a new search!

when you mean wider format, do you mean a format that will take advantage of my 1680 wide monitor? Even if not I can still have two windows of IL (or edmunds or carspace or something else open) and not have to scroll sideways to see everything, but it would be nice to be able to take advantage of the full width of my screen...

To supplement what big al is say, I'm not a fan of this ever widening trend that many sites are doing. Newspapers had narrow columns for a reason. It's easy to read.
Like al, I also like to have several things up on my screen at once. Pushing me to have your site consume my entire screen is frustrating.
New search is great. Giving us Edit is great. I'm sure there are other things that would be great. Ever widening, not so much.

A "preview" of comments will be provided allowing you to edit your comment before it is posted.

Of course the Edit function would receive a hero's welcome if it came back.
I'd also appreciate a locking "Submit" box to eliminate those pesky double posts.
Finally, IL used to tell you if there were new comments for a particular column. Any chance we could get that back?

I read the site on my mobile phone quite a bit. Are you paying any attention to formatting or downsizing the images for people like me?

I almost never do this, but:
"Everything estreka said x2."
X3. - Ray
"Please, Inside Line."

Hopefully the entire Edmunds site gets an overhaul. Compared to the other big autorag sites (C&D, MT) it's jurassic.

search, edit and new comment notification = win.
looking forward to the larger pictures too. I'll second the comments for a widescreen monitor. I have to squint to see detail, lol.

Just please don't go all "Jalopnik commenting 2.0" on us. That was like going from Jurassic to Permian.

Please center the site.
Having double 24" widescreen monitors, you notice things like that.
It's not hard to make a centering wrapper div.
