Frankfurt Preview: Mazda MX-5 Superlight

mazda-sl-r34-950.jpg

A pure concept only according to Mazda, the MX-5 Superlight will make its world premiere at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show next month.

Designed at Mazda's Oberursel studio in Germany, the Superlight is nothing more than an MX-5 that has been stripped of every possible ounce of weight including the windshield. So yeah, not much of a daily driver unless you typically commute with a helmet on. Looks good though.

I'm surprised it has doors.

I'm not a fan of Miatas but this is interesting. Makes me want to put on a pair of the round goggles and leather driving gloves.

This car looks like a design and engineering playground that became a show car by default. Even as a pure concept, I'm sure some design and engineering concepts will make their way into future production Mazdas.

It's all fun and games until someone gets an eye put out.

Looks interesting. I'd be much more interested if it came with the rotary engine... When is the Miata going to graduate to the rotary that it needs?

Looks nice - good to see they're thinking in the correct direction (smaller/lighter) rather than the usual trend.

Also, keep the rotary away from the Miata - people like that it's cheap to run with the corporate 4 cyl. At least, I do.

I'll take one in black! Oh wait, it still looks like a miata, (i mean MX-5) which is to say, not very pretty, IMHO.

@nmcheese, I agree about sticking with the 4-cylinder. The rotary would drive some costomers away, with low torque and low fuel economy. I hope, however, that engine can become more competitive for street cars, because it is interesting.

"Makes me want to put on a pair of the round goggles and leather driving gloves."

Me too! Open race cars always seemed very cool and appealing to me.

The article says this is nothing more than a stripped MX-5, but clearly there are a few styling tweaks, and they could adapt nicely to future, more production-intent models.

Here's hoping for a Mazdaspeed MX-5 soon.

Could they have an optional rotary? I think they need to turbocharge the RX-8. If it's going to swill gas and have no torque, they ought to trade it off with huge power up top.
