This is BMW's dream car of sorts. Oddly named the Vision EfficientDynamics, it's a high performance sedan that's able to mimic the efficiency of a subcompact.
And how does BMW think it could accomplish this? By combining a 1.5-liter direct-injection diesel engine and two electric motors. Altogether, the all-wheel drive setup delivers a total of 356 horsepower while still managing to return 63 mpg according to European testing standards.
Or course, like all concepts, the mileage number depends on many factors that haven't been ironed out yet, so take it all with a grain of salt. We're sensing a slight trend here.

It's a darn shame cars like these never see production. How long do you think it will be before BMW's bores this down with more drab design language.
on a side note this thing looks fantastic and is a good example of what you can do with hybrids in the performance area.
As far as that one electric motor giving short bursts of 136 HP. Makes me truly happy that someone is taking andvantage of over flowing voltage into an electric motor which can effectivly with enough juice double the HP. The down side is high heat which is why they probably only allow short bursts.

so hot. it looks like a better anime robot than the GT-R.

First automakers come up with four door coupes and then they come up with sedans with two doors. Would someone please remind them that sedans have four doors and coupes have two doors. I would never buy a car from a companyh that can't even describe its vehicles correctly.

Nice. The rear looks a little goofy, but the design elements are intriging.

Far more impressive than the hybrid junk BMW showed off recently involving the 7 and that oddball 6sav.

i love the car but ive had it with the electric motor things alrdy. cant they just skip electric and go right to hyrdrogen alrdy? as i said in the B class F-cell post.....
""hydrogen will eventually win out because its most like the cars we already use", as top gear stated not too long ago. ....., in terms of practicallity batteries are less eco-friendly to make. Again, topgear, explained that "the nickle mining for the batteries in cars like the prius, is more damaging to the enviorment then driving a Land Rover discovery"!! the thing with batteries failing is inveitable no ones going to want to wait hrs for a charge when you can just fill up hydrogen like you would gas. So as your best bet of batteries you also have to remeber the technology in hybrids and electric is further along then hydrogen, EV-1 anybody? so given its the underdog and it allows for a intensly abundant source of fuel, while not changing the fast pace life style everttyhing depends on, its very safe to say hydrogen WILL be top dog"...
If honda is the only one who sees this then we are in for some overly practical cars, id love to see a performance oriented hydrogen car for once.

and i agree with arkitect
what in the hell makes this a sedan. its low, has two doors, and seats 4......
the 4 door coupe i liked the name at first and now its wearing off. THIS IS NOT A SEDAN. other wise my jeep GC is an off road coupe, and i dont think thats gonna fly with my insurance company.

I hope that some form of this technology is adapted to a car the size of the 1er. A 2500-2700 pound car that pulls down @50 mpg and runs from 0-60 in around 5.5 seconds would be my dream car.
Regardless, this car is a devastating concept vehicle.

I don't think it's BMW that called this a "sedan"...

Road, I actually like it and I have accepted that we as consumers have to start looking at personal transportation from totally different perspectives.
Look at vehicles from 70 years ago and then compare them to today's offerings. Quite a significant difference and now its time to evolve again.
Green concepts (cars/houses ETC ETC) shouldn't be perceived as trends as being more efficient and having little to no environmental impact should be a lifestyle.

The Chrysler had a diesel-electric hybrid concept making up to 72 mpg (Dodge ESX III) in 2003, but gas was cheap so why spend the extra R & D dollars to get them into production. It should be no surprise that BMW was able to accomplish this 6 years later with all the improvements in hybrid technology.

@93aero
I'm still not sold on Hydrogen Fuel Cells. The idea of having a highly pressurized Hydrogen Tank on a car seems like an accident waiting to happen. Instead of a car wreck, you'd blow up the entire block.
Maybe I'm completely misinformed on hydrogen fuel cell technology, but the FCX Clarity does have a hydrogen tank on board and we all know that Hydrogen is one of the most unstable & combustable elements.

OMG! I had to create an account just to comment on this lovely car. This is what the Camaro should have looked like (honestly I see alot of Camaro in this, just add bowtie grill)!
