First Drive: 2010 Camaro SS Convertible

Sure, the real 2011 Chevrolet Camaro convertible is coming sometime next year, but in the grand tradition of impatient automotive enthusiasts everywhere, an aftermarket company went ahead and built one already.

That company is Newport Convertible Engineering and the minute this orange Camao SS was finished our contributor Patrick Paternie was handed the keys and told not to break it. Later that day, he brought in back in one piece and filed this report.

I'm kind of unimpressed with this conversion. I mean if you just gotta have a new Camaro convertible then OK. The top fit and the cover fit look iffy. Plus loosing the quarter glass is surely going to make a car that's hard to see out of downright difficult. Of course, I guess you can just keep the top down and then all will be right with the world!

"First Drive: 2010 Camaro SS Convertible" - that's a bit of a misleading headline, isn't it? Anything to be "First!". Sort of suggests that it's a real Chevy model, but I guess that was the idea to get people to read it.

I don't know why people out there thinking just because they're able to chop the top off cars therefore they can make convertible cars. The top doesn't look right and boot cover is out of place. Terrible!

Agree. Looks terrible. These are the guys that did it to be the first. Hopefully there are other shops behind them doing it properly that we'll enjoy more. Or maybe those chaps at Chevy might have an idea or two.

Misleading headline indeed.

It should read...

"First Drive: 2010 aftermarket Camaro SS Convertible"

I almost feel sorry for people who buy one. As soon the factory version shows up their chop job will be worth 1/3 what they paid.

Well, at least you guys are close to gathering some decent info from Camaro5 now. It was rather insulting when you previously said no-one knows when the Camaro convertible was coming out when we had hard information on that matter (Q1 2011) posted on that site for some time. It was even more insulting that you guys could look around enough to take some other information out of context in order to fabricate yet another smear campaign against GM, but couldn't even be bothered to look up the convertible's launch date.

When the factory one comes out I'll take one in white with hugger orange rally stripes pace car style
