Acura TSX V6 To Add AWD?

acuratsxv6.jpg

Although not confirmed yet by anyone at Acura, the possibility of an all-wheel-drive version of the V6-powered TSX looks good. When asked if such a car was in the works at a press event, one Acura executive said they're definitely looked at such a setup, but nothing was set in stone.

So it's hardly a done deal, but Acura doesn't go around '"looking at possibilities" without having some kind of solid game plan behind it. We expect to see an all-wheel-drive version of the TSX V6 by next year.

I would suspect that stuffing the 3.5L in the TSX created a good bit of nose heavy torque steer. AWD could go a good ways towards curing that feeling albeit at a possible weight and packaging penalty. Let alone cost. It's ashame that they had to go through all of this because the new TL turned out so ugly. The TSX has always filled it's own niche giving the TL the middle gorund. If they would just get thr RL right again then they would have all three segments covered.

Yeah, why not? Lets see how much heavier we can make the TSX.

Why they didn't install the 2.3 - 4 cyl. turbo engine on the TSX to begin with it?

A high school friend living in Japan has an Accord with the 2.3 turbo engine.

Now, AWD why? Are they going to kill the TL?

NO CONPRENDE!!

How about a RWD TSX! Without the new grill.

Makes sense if they want to be competitive with Ford. :)

not the best angle for the TSX. It looks old and tired.

doing this will kill TL sales. Why do they insist on making the TSX exactly like the TL?

The Subaru Legacy is a much more compelling AWD vehicle than this ever would be, and at a better price point.

The turbo 4 isn't all that efficient. Look at the RDX's abysmal fuel economy and you will understand what I'm getting at.

Honda should have placed a bit more emphasis on chassis tuning vs. adding AWD. I know the car is capable, it just requires attention in a few key areas. Even with that said, this is by far the only Acura that I could ever see myself owning.

I agree with firstwagon, 1487, and gdmstrb.

Yeah, I now fail to see a very clear distinction between the TL and TSX besides a bit of size. There was nothing wrong with the old formula of a compact FWD sporty-ish car. It was distinctive and filled its own niche nicely. I'm not a fan of FWD, but it clearly worked well enough for lots of buyers.

If they DO add All-wheel drive, I'm thinking they should just get rid of the TL and add a few features to the TSX like push button start. The TSX looks better anyway, in my opinion.

TL AWD 3.7L V6 = Audi A6 with 3.0T ??

TSX AWD 3.5 V6 = Audi S4 3.0T ??

I don't know why they would add AWD to the TSX V6.

For 2009, Acura's sales are down by more than 30% compared to 2008. The TL still leads their lineup in sales (20,845 YTD) & the TSX isn't far behind (16,272 YTD).

1487 is right, adding AWD to the TSX will cannibalize TL sales.

I still prefer lasts generation TL, TSX & RL to their current lineup. They should go back to the drawing board and design better looking cars. Something as simple as changing the TL's grill to the Japan version (the Legend) would look better on this car.

Acura has now successfully made all of its sedans virtually the same.

why buy an RL when you can get a TL at a lower cost with the same engine and features?

well, why buy a TL if you can get a TSX with the same engine and features?

some may argue about space, but the TSX is a little bit bigger than a Civic and the TL and RL are pretty much the same.

I'm just impressed that people can keep straight all the car models, and still sound like they know what they're talking about: TSX, TL, RL, RSX, A6, A4, RDX, TYD....oh wait, that's not a car.

"...this is by far the only Acura that I could ever see myself owning."

Agreed. Out of all of Acura's current offerings with the new family look, this one is the best looking of the bunch.

I don't think Acura will introduce the SH-awd system to the current TSX as common sense would tell anyone that doing so would kill TL sales.

I suspect the AWD system may be implemented in the next generation TSX as it wont be a re-badged Euro Accord and the fact that the next generation of Acura vehicles are supposed to be tier 1 designated vehicles.

I'm not sure why Edmunds even mentioned this as its not going to happen at least in this generation of TSX. People must understand that Acura is in a major transition phase and that Acura is trying to find or has found a niche in the luxury market that hasn't been filled. In terms of the future, look for sport/luxury vehicles that offer a totally different take on that definition. Acura will become very, very unique.

Hint: Honda Dual Note Concept

"I would suspect that stuffing the 3.5L in the TSX created a good bit of nose heavy torque steer."

Zoom, actually Acura will electronically dial back the power (like amny other overpowered FED offerings) to significantly reduce torque steer like they did with the last generation TL. Although I'm not fond of this, being FWD, its the only option they have short of developing a RWD chassis or offering AWD standard.

"The turbo 4 isn't all that efficient. Look at the RDX's abysmal fuel economy and you will understand what I'm getting at."

Its not as efficient as it should be in the RDX due to gearing and lack of technologies like DI. However, given the RDX is a 4100lb vehicle and the TSX is 4-500 lbs lighter implementing that engine in the TSX should net much better fuel efficiency numbers. I would have rather seen that engine in the TSX vs the current 3.5 as I think it would fit the application better. However, Acura stated that the 2.3T from the RDX wouldn't fit mainly because of its current top mount intercooler configuration as the TSX wasn't designed with that engine in mind.

Ive always said that Acura should have given the 2.3T more R&D as in its current state it doesn't quite live up to its potential in terms of efficiency or performance. Unfortunately, I think that stems from a very limited budget aka penny pinchers.

The mid 2000 model Acura's were so much better...

"The mid 2000 model Acura's were so much better..."

Id say the 1994-95 Legend GS sedan, Legend LS coupe and the 04-08 TL sedan were the best styled Acura's.
