Spy Photos: Porsche 911 Prototype Shows Off Unique New Roof

911test-4-950.jpg

At first, this prototype for the next-generation Porsche 911 didn't look like much. In fact, it didn't even look like a new test mule given all the 997-series bodywork. But look closer and it's clear there are a few changes to this prototype that aren't on the current model.

Most notable is the "double bubble" roof, although in this case it's less like individual bubbles and more like a dent in the middle. Also note the covered tail section and revised rear bumper. Hard to tell what's going on back there, but clearly some changes are in store as nearly every prototype we've seen has featured similar camouflage.

Yaaaaawn....
Each new version take a few seconds of the previous years model.

Other than the GT3 (and the discontinued Carerra GT), not one other Porsche model is worth time.

MMicheal, the 911 has always been about evolution rather than revolution and that's its secret to success. However, I do think Porsche could go further with the 911's styling without steering away from it's iconic and historic profile.

Whatever this thing is, its not the next gen 911 (998) Prototype, because we've seen 998 Prototypes already with less camo and this is not it.
The real 998 looks lower, longer and has door-skin mounted side view mirrors like the new Panamera.

While Porsche's tradition is enviable and impressive, it must also feel like a trap for the designers of the 911. Every new generation looks like the old, and there isn't much to get excited about. Yet, when seeing decades worth of Porshes at the Sovren Vintage car races at Pacific Raceways this July 4th, it brought a tear to my eye.
