Revealed: 2010 Acura ZDX

acruazdxf34-950.jpg

These are the first official pictures of the 2010 Acura ZDX crossover, a vehicle you might remember from the 2009 New York Auto Show where it appeared as a concept.

As you can see, not much has changed. Acura calls its styling "provocative" and "segment bending," both of which would be true if BMW hadn't already introduced its X6.

Still, it's a big step for Acura, as the ZDX is essentially a vehicle that will largely rely on its styling to entice buyers more so than sheer practicality or value. Not that it won't have plenty of either, as the ZDX gets essentially the same drivetrain and interior as the new TL sedan. That means a 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 and Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) along with a well-trimmed interior stocked with the latest technology. Sales begin later this year.

I like it, as I think this is best execution to date of Acura's current "design language."

Whether you agree or disagree with this new CUV-coupe trend, that's a different matter. I'm comfortable with it.

Wow, it's a modern day Pontiac Aztec, only twice as expensive and less practical.

fuhteng says:

It isn't as ugly as an FX, I'll give it that. But man, is this CUV thing really the future of cars? I'll take a Suburban, thanks.

RS - Perhaps from a purely artistic standpoint, but practically speaking, this thing's still ugly & I don't see this design aging very well. Swing & MISS!

what the hell is honda/accura doing?

rsholland says:

02:43 PM, 07/20/09

Any time you inject the word "coupe" (this is a CUV-coupe afterall, like the BMW X6 and Infinity FX models) into the discussion, practicality suffers. No argument there.

firstwagon says:

I just don't see the purpose of driving a big heavy vehicle if it isn't practical or at least cool looking.

BTW...It still looks like it's wearing a fake moustache.

I've been battling a queasy stomach off and on all day today. Thanks for making me lose that battle for good Edmunds. That styling makes me pine for the days of the Pontiac Aztek.

brn says:

I don't think the Aztek comparison is fair. The Aztek had some practicality to it. This thing doesn't.

Is there ANY rear headroom?

shaohsiin says:

03:20 PM, 07/20/09

I think it looks sharp. I like the design a lot. Although it lacks the space of a conventional SUV, it still provides more utility than a common sedan. IMO A CUV is not going to replace a conventional SUV, but for family already owns a Suburban or for those who live in big cities, the car does make sense.

shaohsiin says:

03:24 PM, 07/20/09

I don't see this design has anything similar to Aztek besides the hatchback.

4g63 says:

03:25 PM, 07/20/09

i think the FX looks 10x better. the front of this thing is just fugly...

b_boy_007 says:

03:41 PM, 07/20/09

It looks like a TL mixed with a Prius. Next!

cruiserhead1 says:

04:16 PM, 07/20/09

it's a winning combination of ugly & boring. Hard to pull off but Acura did it again.

caheew says:

04:40 PM, 07/20/09

I'm pretty sure this will still sell. The X6 has sold, and I am sure that this isn't a high-production car anyway. Honda has gone a little bit bonkers with their styling.

inlinesix says:

04:46 PM, 07/20/09

I'd take the FX line over this any day.

niallyb says:

04:55 PM, 07/20/09

Hello my name is Pig McUgly and my resale value can be posted at the bottom of the nearest canal.

As a design this thing has EPIC FAIL written all over it.

Q5, X60 or FX any time over this thing. It looks like a Deceptecon in mid transformation !

billt9 says:

05:50 PM, 07/20/09

The front end needs work.
Too plain.

fil93 says:

05:54 PM, 07/20/09

in my opinion, pretty good work has been done by Acura. I think the styling in sharp though it's different. it's a like-it-or-not one..

wasaabi92 says:

06:49 PM, 07/20/09

That C-pillar is came out really unsuccesful. Between the awkward shut line, door handle, and blacked out trim ... it's just a mess. Kind of like the rest of the car, really.

cjasis says:

07:30 PM, 07/20/09

If Acura is relying on this kind of styling to entice buyers, they're in trouble. This thing is ugly all day long.

autoboy16 says:

07:40 PM, 07/20/09

Personally, I think in order to design a Coupe/Suv Cross, you have to make a great Coupe and Suv. The MDX is great, but Acura has No coupe. There was the CL, but that was axed 6years ago... And if Acura is looking to it for style to sale a "stylish" vehicle, then as Cjasis said, they're in trouble.

The reason the X6 isn't 100% bad is because the stylers could look at the 3 and 6 series coupes for design. Oh, and its sporty to drive and people buy BMW for sport.

I still think Acura should Axe this now and spend the money on New Styling, A Coupe, a Convertible, and Bades for real names. I don't mind the Alphanumeric names, but it seems ZDX was just pulled out of thin air. I mean, one can't even make an Acronym for ZDX and keep a serious face.

kurtamaxxxguy says:

07:45 PM, 07/20/09

Hopefully Acura took the rear seats out because nothing other than kiddies or pets will be able to sit back there.

fuhteng says:

08:16 PM, 07/20/09

Come on, the FX scares small children and looks like it will eat your soul. This thing is just flat ugly. What weird headlights.

kingkhalas says:

08:49 PM, 07/20/09

OMG.

Just when I thought Acura couldn't make it worse.

eric808 says:

02:20 AM, 07/21/09

I only have this to say. Ugly as hell. The only good thing about it is the interior. I wonder what Jeremy Clarkson has to say about the ZDX?

tryan says:

03:13 AM, 07/21/09

POWER PLENUM!

Seriously though, yesterday I met somebody who actually preferred the current TL styling to the last gen....I had no idea how to respond to that.

Either way, styling is subjective, but take a step back and from the side, this thing looks like Honda put some junk in the trunk of an Accord Coupe and welded the front of a TL to it. Even the chrome trimmed window outline is nearly identical the the Accord Coupe's...

On a positive note, I actually like the current Honda/Acura interiors; They are comfortable, functional and well finished - very much befitting their respective market segments.

"I don't think the Aztek comparison is fair. The Aztek had some practicality to it. This thing doesn't.

Is there ANY rear headroom?"

i dont see the issue beng headroom, i see it more being visability from the driver and rear passengers.

nothing i love more than sitting in someones back seat and seeing a plastic wall with a window above me.

and even worse i cant see this thing doing well with visability. the govenment seems to want to impliment all these saftey nannies but they dont seem to think we need to be able to look around us when were driving.

zoomzoomn says:

05:35 AM, 07/21/09

Holy cow, Acura needs to rethink their front end styling! Ugly!!! I finally saw a new TL on the road the other day. Other than the fugly front end it was not as bad in person as it has looked in pictures. They made it work on the TSX, but went too far overboard on everything else.

1487 says:

06:11 AM, 07/21/09

its going to be expensive, small, inefficient and its not attractive. What is the point? I guess Acura wants a low volume vehicle to boost their image. That sloping rear hatch is over the top. What will you be able to store behind the rear seats?

rick8365 says:

06:13 AM, 07/21/09

I thought the TL was a giant design mistake at first....have to say that it has grown on me over time - to the point that I'm not sure it was a mistake. This one hits me the same way initially. The styling / design may grow on me but it doesn't have the TL's practicality to have it make more sense......and who's gonna sit/fit in that backseat??

dougtheeng says:

06:46 AM, 07/21/09

"it's a winning combination of ugly & boring."

My thoughts exactly. Boring and ugly....a rare but offensive combination. I'll take just boring, or just ugly....but together? FAIL. Honda and BMW have lost their ropes and my respect.

stephen987 says:

07:39 AM, 07/21/09

Honda appears to have truly lost its way. Hyundai, here I come. . .

rsholland says:

07:45 AM, 07/21/09

The only thing I don't like is that there is no rear wiper. Big mistake IMO.

bbechtel16 says:

08:59 AM, 07/21/09

As much as I hate most CUVs, I don't think this really looks that bad, WITH EXCEPTION to the upper rear door/C pillar,, WTH is going on there? The Acura corporate grille is also hideous.

top_hat says:

10:53 AM, 07/21/09

This thing is ugly and I don't understand why anybody would want one because it also lacks practicality. I also think the X6 is ugly. Neither is as ugly as the Aztec, but that bar is extremely low.

I drive a 2006 TL and am totally turned off by the new Acura styling with the hawk beaks. I would have loved to have a 2006 style TL with a hatchback that looked like the sedan, but offered more function. But, I guess good looking hatchbacks don't sell and aren't "image" cars.

93aero says:

02:20 PM, 07/21/09

this isnt even half suv, this is more half coupe half tall sedan. like a hunchback on wheels

mrbacon says:

06:28 PM, 07/21/09

They really have to stop it with that.. "grille". Things be gettin' outta hand.

jpdisarro says:

09:46 PM, 07/21/09

I don't think it looks bad, and it certainly looks better than the new FX. I'll have to see it in person before I can truly judge, however.

brizey says:

06:54 AM, 07/22/09

Other than "6 cylinders is more than 4 cylinders", why would anyone buy this over an RDX? The RDX has more room, will most likely cost less, and be just about as fast and handle very similarly. And they are both similarly style challenged.

(The RDX engine is underrated in terms of power--it will run rings around an MDX despite being only about 10% lighter. So the V6 vs. turbo 4 arguments don't go anywhere.)

thejohnp says:

12:58 PM, 07/22/09

Isn't this just a near carbon copy of Honda's Accord based CrossTour? In that it's also unattractive and highly impractical.

I guess it's because they realistically don't sell, but manufacturers shouldn't have given up on making wagons. A wagon version would be better looking and actually, I don't know, hold stuff?!? Check out the UK Accord wagon to see how nice that looks. What a shame the US will never see one.

And I'm going to stop calling these things crossovers and start using 93aero's descriptive - hunchbacks.

duncan36 says:

12:42 PM, 07/25/09

Ugly, derivative, impractical. Acura has totally lost itself. Surest way to tell they've lost themself is they are trying to define themself with that God awful plastic giant front grill.

cat_bus says:

10:32 AM, 08/11/09

That is some bad photography. You can see every seam on that car.
