Not A Cash-For-Clunkers Post: The Forgotten Cadillac Wagon

Sbarro Caddy wagon f34 700.jpg

Cadillac has been lying again. You remember when it said the Catera zigged? That was a lie. And now this: Cadillac has been hyping the CTS Sportwagon as if it's the first station wagon from the men and women behind the wreath and crest. Nope.

Way back in 1978 Italian-Swiss nutball Franco Sbarro constructed this, um, this, er...constructed the Sbarro TAG Function Car. And, wait...are those sidepipes? Niice!

Anyway, the so-called Function Car was built in association with Techniques d-Avant Garde (TAG) as a mobile office containing two telephones (!), a television, four cushy chairs and two super-classy wood-and-leather secretaries. The stock Cadillac 8.2-liter V8 powered a couple of the six wheels. Sbarro built a grand total of one of these 23-and-a-half-foot-long monsters. There was a plan to contruct 25 of them before sanity prevailed. Sbarro his-own-self owns the Function Car after he failed to sell it to a musician who wanted to install a piano in the back, before sanity prevailed.

We think this whole conversion van/wagon/caddy thing would have worked had Sbarro offered customized airbrush murals for the back and/or curb-feelers. But maybe that's just us.

Cadillac: There's still time to do the CTS Sportwagon up right.

It may not be a C4C post, but that, um......... "thing" deserves to be crushed with all the rest of the clunkers. Honestly, just looking at that thing gives me one more reason why I'm thankful that I wasn't alive in the 70's.

In the '70s a number of people cut the tops off of GM A-body wagons and grafted them onto Eldorado or Coupe de Ville bodies, or welded B-/C-body wagon backs on Sedan de Ville bodies, even going so far as to cover the wagon top in vinyl to match the Eldo's original roof. If you like the original cars, they don't look half bad, and fit right into the '70s.

Why be mean to Cadillac? It's true that there's been no factory built station wagon from Caddy before...previous wagons have been the work of coach builders. Might I suggest googling shooting brake? Now there's some wagons...

And of course there's the Ectomobile. But unlike Sbarro's Function Car, that thing is just silly.

I like the styling of the CTS sedan but I like the SportWagon better. One of the best looking wagons offered along with the A4 Avant.

Yes, because some random guy making a on-off custom is exactly the same as Cadillac itself actually making a wagon. Cadillac didn't lie at all, but you guys did.

Cadillac has made lots of wagons. They're called hearses. I'm pretty sure you could get one without the hearse equipment. Before paramedics and 911 most ambulances were Cadillac wagons. Did you miss Ghostbusters?

After Kent State and 'Nam the seventies were cool, man. Watergate, Farrah Fawcett, halter-tops, Jimmy Carter, no disco - good times.

Let us also not forget Ecto 1, the Ghostbuster mobile. Technically, that's a wagon.

And here you thought that Nissan/Infinity crossovers were goofy looking!
