According to a new study by research firm AutoPacific, 15 percent of American car buyers would consider a vehicle made in China. The number drops to 11 percent when the theoretical vehicle is from India.
The numbers don't seem all that impressive, but the AutoPacific reports also notes that when asked the same question about Korean vehicles, the number only jumps to 16 percent.
"As Hyundai and Kia have been on the American scene for decades now, it's surprising that consideration for Chinese and Indian brands, sight unseen, would be about as strong as it is for the Korean brands," said George Peterson, president of automotive research firm AutoPacific and author of the study. "However, with so many premium and high-tech non-automotive products already being made in China and purchased by Americans, why not automobiles too?"

some Chinese cars were better assembled than the ones made by the Americans here in America.
(yes, I drove them before)

I would not consider a Chinese vehicle until they had developed a decent reputation.

I think 15% of people will "consider" just about anything.
New study says that 15% of people would consider jumping off a building if they saw someone else doing it.

I wouldn't consider a chinese vehicle until their cars live up to American expectation because people expect affordable cars that are safe, reliable, and stylish. The Chinese cars aren't there quite yet. The knock-offs just keep on coming...

I would never buy a Chinese made car! Actually let me rephrase that, I wouldn't buy a car from a Communist country! Toys and junk is one thing coming from China since you can't really control where it is made, everything cheap is pretty much made in China, but a major purchase like a car is in your control since many high quality cars are made right here in the US. Our politicians have sold out this country's economy to the Chinese! When the h*ll are they going to bring the manufacturing jobs back to the US? After all, a country cannot survive on selling pizzas to each other!

What do you expect from Wal-Mart nation?

Sure- Wal-Mart is the cause of all of America's woes. They've done horrible things like give every American a raise due to increased buying power, make prescription drugs available for 4.00, and give back to the communities in which they serve.. How dreadful- pullllease.

Despite all the union generated anti Wal-mart hype, they are no worse then any number of other department stores.
The Chinese are a lot like Wal-mart. If you want cheap junk they will build /sell it to you. It's your choice. It's up to you. If you think a $20 DVD player is good enough for you then the Chinese will be happy to build you one and Wal-mart will sell it to you.
Something you might want to think about is they can also build good stuff. We had a number of high tech components supplied to us from our Chinese plant over the last few years. The parts were built there to please the evil parent company that bought us out 4 years ago. The big surprise is the work was really good.
Chinese cars may not be cutting edge yet but don't dismiss them. They are learning fast and have more drive to succeed then any big three auto manager or UAW worker.

New study shows that the majority of our fellow Americans are morons.
I'm not sold on the Chinese automakers yet (something to do with their safety record, and the fact that they are mostly cheap copies of other existing cars). But there are a lot of Hyundais and Kias out there, so I think the data about how many people would really consider a Korean car could be off. Either that or people just don't know where their cars come from. Like the stork... for cars.
Remember, these people being polled are the reason we don't have more cars with sport-tuned suspensions. They are why we can't have nice things.

maxhonda99, if it wasn't for the Chinese gov't buying up a lot of the US bonds, you and your beloved country along with all the politicians will be in a much shittier hole than they already are in. and since when this country produces many high quality cars? do you... live... in... a... cave... somewhere in the mountains? well, glad you have internet access. perhaps you can learn to look up a thing or 2.

I would have to strongly disagree. It's not about merely importing cheap junk. Their ability and willingness to manipulate the market into submission is impressive. I'd get into specifics, but this is an automobile web site.
alman08: they only did that to keep themselves alive. If we go down the tubes, they're next. Kinda of like the whole Mutually Assured Destruction thing we had with Russia a while back. It's not good for either one of us.

Will it be full of MSG or MPG?
And with six will you get eggroll?

Alman08,
Well if it weren't for our idiotic American politicians, there wouldn't have been a need to sell massive amounts of american T-bills to the Chinese. Get it?
The politicians, along with lawyers, have made it way too expensive to manufacture products in this country by over regulating all industries. And also by signing ridiculous trade laws which have favored foreign countries over our own.
I'm all for free trade, fair trade, but if you want to survive you got to make and sell products competitively.
Actually all of my cars have been American made so far. My last 2 are Honda/Acura and both were made in Ohio and both are extremely well built cars.

I would have thought the Korean car would do better in the survey. Certainly, I've already considered them, and even helped a relative shop for one. Korean cars have paid their dues and are squarely in the market right now.
