Before we have had a chance to get our heads around the supremely weird 5 Series GT hatchback, crossover, tall-sedan thing-a-ma-bob, BMW has confirmed that it's going to bring the weirdness to the 3-series line.
Inside Line has the full details and some illustrations of the vehicle that's set to come to the U.S. in 2001. Who exactly will buy the 3 Series GT instead of an X1 or X3 or 3-series sedan or wagon is an open question.

Boom. That's the sound BMW's shareholders are going to hear as more of these worthless X and XAV-ish products roll out.

Hmmmm.... I actually like the looks of the 3-series GT. The 5 looks bloated while the 3 looks better balanced. Frankly, I'm not a fan of the Bangle design language, although with time it's moved from offensive to just kind of odd. Combined with the better looks in my opinion, this may be the first 3-series I've been at all interested in since the '06 redesign. I do agree with bluedotguy on the X6 & XAV models however, take a not very attractive or utilarian X5 and make it uglier and less useful, but more expensive. Great plan! Apparently BMW is following the GM playbook to the letter!

It has the same role as the X1.
More consumer choices, minimal company investment by modifying an existing 3-series.
Sounds like a good deal.
At least it's still a wagon, and the rear seats fold down.
Because we know nobody buys the "real" fully wagon version. Don't care why, consumers just don't buy wagons. So wagons are not in the equation and they're bad investments.
Toyota has a lineup of 61 car models in Japan. Same role, different designs. More consumer choices, minimal investment. Nothing bad, as long as they're not half ass old school rebadges.
This 3-series GT isn't a half ass rebadge. And it looks not bad.

Change the headlights, grill, and badges, and you have a *new* Saab 900.

I like it—a lot. I find it far more interesting visually than the 3-Series sedan.
I'm also glad to see that more 5-door models are starting to show up, especially from brands that you wouldn't expect this body style from.

I wish they used the Coupe's front end instead of the sedan's front.
I find the 3 sedan ugly in the first place. But the 3 coupe is hot.

The e91 (wagon version) still doesn't offer the twin turbo but this Chevy Citation look-alike will?
The 328 e91 sells quite well as just an i and xi with the 3.0 but adding the 3.0TT and 4.0 will go a long way to improving sales of an existing model. This new variation offers LESS room than the e91 and it will require retooling.
It makes zero sense. I think someone at BMW has a bet on how many lame offshoots they can create before the board fires the lot.

It looks lower than the sedan to me, not tall like the X6. Also, the best-looking BMW in years. Saying it looks like a Hyundai Elantra or a Chevrolet Citation, except that they all have 4 doors and 4 wheels, is demented. Most of the people who think the 5-series GT and this are weird seem to work for Edmund's.

F41L, just get an E91 wagon as blueguydotcom mentioned.
And WTH are they bringing an X1 and no E87 hatchback. IDIOTS!

I like all things "335i" ... but a GT variant? Eh, I'm not so sure. I'm sure some people who want a 335i wagon (which isn't available) would go for this over the 328i wagon and X1 28i/ X3 30i. It's interesting, I'll give it that, but soon a (non-M) 3 series will be starting at $50k, and that's a bit much if you ask me.
I want a 135i sedan like the old E30. That would be just about perfect!

BMW needs a new design team.

Certainly nothing wrong with expanding a product portfolio but this is ridiculous as there is going to be too much overlap in product.

BMW's really got something going here. A 7 series GT and 6 series GT would be nice too. Then, eventually maybe an X6 GT. I can't wait for the X4 crossover. Maybe after that, they'll make an X4 GT. And how cool would a Z4 GT look?

IfBMW's plan was to obliterate the lines between car and SUV, they've sure succeeded. Me, I never thought I'd long for a good looking station wagon until now...

The 3 version hatchback is quite fitting in its design. Better looking than the 5 series version. What I don't understand is why are they delaying the CS design that they unveiled in China? Why not use the CS design and create a 5 & 7 derivatives, instead of creating new segments with questionable design. Obviously, CS have already created a following, even though it is not yet in the market. That following was a good sign, that BMW totally disregarded. BMW NEED TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX when it comes to design.

Looks like BMW dredged up the 318ti and put the N54 engine in it. I'm not sure that they're really trying anything new here, just re-introducing in hopes that this time the hatchback will catch on.
So why didn't they call it the 335ti?

I'm OK w/ it. I agree w/an earlier poster that the 3er GT looks sleeker ("less bloated") then the 5GT.
Bottom line: there will always be a 3er sedan/coupe for those that want a tighter body line (own 1 in the family), but for those w/ the need/practicality, e.g. pets/children, I'd take this GT, with its lower center of gravity & better handling, over an X3.
Would consider one as our 2nd car next time we trade one of the Bimmers.
