If you haven't been following the what seems to be never-ending Mayfield NASCAR drug test saga, all you really need to know is he originally tested positive for methamphetamines and was cleared by a judge of the accusations just a few days ago.
Although he had the chance to hit the tarmac over the weekend, he failed to bring his team to the Daytona International Speedway. Mayfield had a mere twenty-four hours to prepare his car, assemble a team and get sponsorship for the race, and decided it wasn't worth it -- especially on our country's birthday weekend.
"We've been watching on television and reading on-line about the 'Storm Clouds Over Daytona' and the 'Mayfield Media Circus'. Honestly, this is the last thing [my wife] or I want for anybody. This weekend shouldn't be about a questionable drug test or a flawed drug testing system. It should be about celebrating our country," Mayfield said in a statement.
As of now, he is not on the entry list for Saturday's race at the Chicagoland Speedway. It might be doubtful that he makes it, considering the two months of bad press and his team's lingering financial struggles.

I'm not sure if that was his best career move. Not being there is almost like a small admission of guilt. Atleast on first read that is my gut feeling.
