Sales of the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid started yesterday in Korea. The compact sedan uses Hyundai own hybrid technology to deliver up to a 47% improvement in mileage over a standard Elantra.
The drivetrain consists of a 1.6-liter internal combustion engine that runs on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (think propane) and a electric motor powered by Lithium Ion Polymer batteries. Hyundai says it only plans to sell around 7,500 units of the new hybrid in Korea this year before it expands production to allow overseas sales. Expect to see a similar car sold in the U.S. by 2012.
