Ferrari's Felipe Massa is undergoing surgery after he was injured in a crash during qualifying for F1's Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday. He was airlifted to a hospital in Budapest where physicians determined he had suffered "a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion," Ferrari said in a statement.

Massa lost control of his car after flying debris from Brawn's Rubens Barrichello's car struck him in the helmet, evidently knocking him unconscious. He veered into the grass on entry to a corner, then ran across the track into a runoff area where he struck a 4-layer tire wall nose-first. He was on the brakes at the time, but also had the throttle open -- lending credence to the idea that he was not conscious.

Ferrari says it will provide updated information on his condition later today.

Ugh, that was brutal. Spring to the helmet. Hopefully he will be ok.

I thought all cars designed to stop if full throttle and full brake take action simultaneously.

The video no longer works.

Didn't this same thing just happen to the famous son too? A piece of another car wacks him in the head and then he crashes. I hope he will be okay.

Moving forward, does open wheel now mandate roofs? If so, how does the driver get in and out in a hurry?
