With fuel economy regulations getting tougher by the minute, the push toward cars that don't burn any fuel at all is finally gaining some momentum. According to a report from a recent Volkswagen business meeting, CEO Martin Winterkorn told those in attendance that his company would have an electric version of the Up! minicar on the road by 2013.
In related news, a report from the Nikkei daily says that Toyota intends to begin mass production of a plug-in Prius hybrid in 2011. Toyota is currently planning to start leasing plug-in Prius test vehicles later this year. Oddly enough, the Nikkei report also says that Toyota is planning to charge a hefty price premium for the privilege, as much as $8,000. Seems like a stretch for a car that is only expected to go about 12 miles in all electric mode.

I'll wait until battery technology catches up. These still aren't feasible.
