According to a report in Automotive News, the next generation Dodge Avenger may switch to a shortened version of Chrysler's rear-wheel drive LX platform. Already in use underneath the Challenger, the smaller platform would be used to distinguish the Avenger from the Chrysler Sebring which would remain on a front-wheel drive platform borrowed from Fiat.
On the surface, it seems like a reasonable idea, but it's hard to ignore the fact that Dodge already builds the four-door Charger on the standard LX platform. Would a slightly smaller version really add much to the lineup?

I'd like to see a new rear drive platform. Using the Charger platform means the car will be almost as heavy as the Charger. I'd like to see a rear drive platform that weighs around 3200 lbs.
Then they would have something interesting.

I'm surprised its not the other way around, as that was the platform the 200C concept, which was well received, was based on... and its also not that much shorter and lighter than the Charger, so how different would it be, unless the Charger is to grow, which would ruin it as well. Also, I'm not sure how they could make a business case with CAFE for this sort of thing, unfortunately.

Yessir, lighter weight Chrysler cars... now that's a good idea.

I read that both the Chrysler & the Dodge were being considered for RWD as a means of setting them apart from the rest of the midsize field & as a way of building on the LX cars' identities. Seems like a good idea to me as long as a) the cars are small enough and b) Chrysler/Fiat's able to style the cars in a way that clearly identifies them as RWD.

they should take alot more from the challenger then just the rwd :)

Lightweighting is the way to go, as means of preserving RWD performance while attaining CAFE targets. They can keep the price reasonable by designing weight savings from scratch rather than relying on exotic materials. Alas if they're going to use the mini-LX the new Avenger will be a St Bernard instead of a Greyhound.

Smartest idea Chrysler has had since the 300. As for the fwd Sebring, what happened to the 200C?! That was the suprise shocker of detroit.

would work well.
Just needs to get 26/34 mpg.

i think a smaller, lighter charger would be great. that think is way too big and bulky to look good anyway

I really like this idea! But i think that the car needs to stay the same size. It can NOT get any larger or it will steal Charger sales. OH, and it has to get a great V6 option as the v8 will also steal charger sales.
Hmm, a midsize RWD with a strong V6. In a Dodge Sedan. ME LIKEY!!

The rwd replacement CANNOT get any larger or it will be uneconomical for buyers in this market. And it needs a gas sipping, yet slightly sporty 4-cyl. That's the only way this car can be a success. Can Chrysler do it with rwd? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

well if the new Grand Cherokee is any preview to their new interiors i think this could be a really good car. their new 3.6 V6's sound to be pretty good too. 280HP i belive?
if they can get this one right i can see alot of people who wanted the G8 but either missed it or thought it was too expensive dropping in on this offering.

i also dont see dodge/Fiat shooting themselves in the foot. it may get a little bigger (to better size it with new, larger cars like the accord) but i dont see them trying to impede on the already slowing down of charger sales.

Drop one of them thar purdy new 'Pentastar' V6s in there, slap on a twin-turbo, there's your SRT-6.
FIAT can take care of making the rest of the next-gen Avenger appealing.
