Today marks the beginning of the "new" GM, freshly removed from bankruptcy and ready to prove to the world that it can be profitable again. In an often voiced but rarely followed mantra, CEO Fritz Henderson said it wasn't going to be "business as usual" anymore.
He seemed so sincere, yet moments later he announced that Bob Lutz, a 78-year old GM veteran would return to head up "creative" development, a role in which he would oversee product design, marketing and communications.
There's no doubt that Lutz, even at 78, is one of the best minds in the industry, but given GM's deep internal talent pool we find it hard to believe this is the best Fritz could do. Good luck "new" GM, you're going to need it.

"Creative" and "GM" are two words that I have never associated... at least not in the last few decades.
They have a large number of practical, sensible, affordable cars and trucks but nothing I would consider creative.
Perhaps someone new, a fresh younger mind would be a better choice here.

Lemme get this straight-the "new" GM brings back an OLD GM exec?
Wow; I'm gonna buy some Ford stock ASAP.

To me, this comes off as a rather large middle finger raised towards American taxpayers.

Lutz is a very special person. Yes, GM may be awash with creative talent as Ed suggests, but it's hard to find someone who has the superb creative instincts, the distinguished track record, and incredible charisma that Lutz has. I just wished he was 20 or 30 years younger.

I dont like where the auto industry is headed...not that where it is coming from was all that great either. Lets rewind to 1970 and pretend all is right with the auto market. :D

For once I agree with this post.
"Good luck 'new' GM, you're going to need it."

GM is so clueless. One of the stewards of the brand's demise is retained to continue to steer the ship in the wrong direction. Bob Lutz represents everything that went wrong on a corporate level in this country. He's been living on past accolades for years while flipping off every hardworking person in this country.

I guess GM has not learned it's lesson - a 78 year old overseeing design, marketing and communication REALLY? Shouldn't they be bringing in some new talent - supposed to be the new GM sounds like its just the old GM now free of most of its debt...WTF!

Word on the street has it that 78 year old Lutz's first design call is to make sure that all future GM cars have the left turn signal permanently on..

Wow. Lotta negativity here. I'm not sure it's all justified. Sure he's 78 and he shoots his mouth off. I'd like to be doing that when I'm 78 too. Since Lutz came to GM he's been responsible for the Solstice (not the most practical car, but drop-dead gorgeous and it beat or came close to beating the Miata in comparos when it first came out), the G8, the CTS, the latest Malibu, and their large crossovers. Not a bad record.
People are saying "what does a 78-year-old know about designing cars for today's market?" Well, he doesn't need to design the cars. He's the leader - he needs to identify talent, inspire them, and protect them from the beancounters. And if I was a beancounter, I'd be intimidated by a cigar-chomping ex-marine who flies jets and drives a Cunningham.
If I have a concern it's with him also being responsible for marketing. That's a lot to put on one man's shoulders, and I'm not sure of his expertise in this area.
My two cents.

Lutz had some good ideas here and there, but for god's sake he's 78 years old, and he is one of the GM leaders who took their company to failure.
Of course, why should we expect any different? GM has the protection of the US Government. Why should it feel any need to run efficiently? Let's just turn it into a retirement home for all of our friends!

I think Bob & Ed (head designer) GM has a future :)
Lutz should think about some jung next product director (car-guy)
about product:
I belive Vette should look more like "Transformers concept" than that "Ferrari like designe proposed by Motortrend few weeks/months ago("If we would run GM " article),
....
Impala sells wel so they wont replace it with G8 , but this car in more attractive shape could sell well (how about Monte Carlo or Riviera or Velite concept, maybe Chevelle? - Challanger rival[camaro is more Mustang fighter , bigger Challanger is little bit diferent vehicle) - sth like old Personal Lux cars...
.....
keep the Solstice alive...this coupe looks awsome, and put v6 from Camaro in it :)(ohh GM is selling / or remove this factory..problem..)
..........
..and I wish Cadillac well...
I want to see 2-door convertible version of CTS
they should make XLR better car instead killing it (they need SL rival)
..and build a flagship(s): CTS bigger brother..and how about Eldorado , based on that extravagant Sixteen concept...
.................
ooohh...one more thing : why Future GM bestseller - Chevy Volt has to be so ugly !!?!
it should look like that concept version...now it looks like stupid Prius...
I would prefere that old EV-1 car design than this...
I hope I'm not a dreamer after all...
