After this morning's leak of the official photos, the BMW X1 didn't seem like much of a secret anymore. With than in mind, an official press release was sent out this afternoon with a few details on the upcoming crossover.
It's definitely headed to the U.S., but not until 2011. The X1 will offer both rear- and all-wheel drive and a variety of engines. Although BMW said the X1 will offer one gas and three diesel powerplants in Europe, it said the specific engine configuration of the U.S. model has not been decided yet. Sounds like BMW is waiting to see if diesels catch on, so far it hasn't been promising.

Looks like BMW acquired a few Acura designers....

Awesome! If there is one thing the U.S. market needs, it is another small crossover.
HA4, I also see some Infiniti EX in there as well.

You know, if the X1 23d were offered over here, with a proper manual ... I'd consider it. It'd be a good car for me and my girlfriend (she likes thr higher ride height, and I like turbos and clutches). I even like it in that color with those wheels.
It'll sell well, esp in the Northeast and the OC.

That's the best looking BMW for a decade.

The color is beautiful, but this thing is just plain an ordinary. The wheel design isn't great. The shape and huge openings of the wheel arches along with the blunt flatness of the lower part of the front is just not good.

Almost totally unnecessary. Unattractive too.

AND the 335 GT?! WTF?!

Right now BMW is an efficient fit company. They have just enough models (minus the X6). I'm afraid with the addition of all of these new models they will become, as a company, flabby. They should take a lesson from some of the American car companies who aren't doing too hot right now.

awful.

They'll at least sell it with the 3.0 inline 6 here. The bigger question - why? Give us a 128 WAGON not one of these dorky, too-high XAV thingies.

Why is BMW committing to ugly cars?

In the recent years the BMW brand has made a name for cars that look a little out of place but it has changed modern designs. Now a days all cars try to imitate Bangle's designs (Acura, Lexus, and Infinity) using weird concave shapes and a lot of lines. Even though BMW has now changed to a new head of design Adrian Van Hooydonk. He sucks even more, he started using huge grills that look like giant nostrils, huge disproportional front ends and wants to build cars that look like Honda CRX's. I miss the old days when bmw designing cars with forward lines and a very angular designs for motor sporting rather than just badges and cars that look different (ugly).

This is funny. They wanted bangle out for making "ugly cars" and now that hes gone, they've been getting worse!! X6, 7(BORING), 5GT, 3GT, and now this. I think Bangle needs his job back....
BMW is pondering why their 335d doesn't sell? The fact that it costs about $50k for a non base model is a good reason! The X5 is understandable. BMW should sale a 330d or smaller here in the $30k area. I bet it will sell then!
