2010 Jaguar XJ: How Does It Look On the Road?

jagxjf34-950.jpg jagxjr34-950.jpg

The 2010 Jaguar XJ sedan was revealed to the world at a glitzy London party on July 9th. It looked pretty good under all the glaring lights. Elle MacPherson standing next to it in a short dress didn't hurt either.

But of course, the real test of how well a new design works comes when you see it out on the road. Our spy shooters in Death Valley recently caught up with an undisguised XJ test mule and took a few clear shots to give us a better look at its new shape.

So what do think? Does this design push Jaguar ahead, or will it stifle whatever momentum the XF had generated?

Not as vanilla as the XF but a car with zero panache. How Jag stays open selling Taurus look-alikes is beyond me. And now that Ford is gone there isn't even a good excuse for the banality.

yikes. i much prefer the previous model and its storied look. This is....not good.

my sentiments exactly.

dougtheeng: you summed it up with two words, "storied past"

I'm 36, maybe it is an age thing? Am I considered old?

Maybe it's the setting & the color, you guys...

The "C" pillar and tail lights are hideous on this Jag!

I'm probably not in the demographic for Jaguar but I would get something else before the XJ. But the 2008 and later XF and XK do look better to me than the old styles.

It looks just like a Lincoln MKS sedan. The rear is almost identical and it has that same, cheap, almost luxury look.
Fail.

uhhhh... I liked it in the revealing. Here? Not so much. It just doesn't look right some how.

I'm 64 and like this new Jag.

As to the "storied past?" That ended with the XKE for me. I see the out-going XJ sedans Euro-old fogie cars. Yes, I can say that because I am an old fogie. :)

I'm supposed to want this? Aspire to own one? Maybe it's the color, maybe it's the lard-ass. I'd say it's 7/8 there, but it's not enough. I actually like the design of the MKS better.

My favorite thing about the XJ was that it looked like an old British car. It had a real classy look to it. The last XJ pulled away from that a bit. This one loses it completely.

It's now a different car.

i like, it seems to be the fresh futuristic view on the old jag, i liked the old jag just as much, but for a younger generation this fits. Tho, in these pictures it looks odd because this isn't its intended environment, this would be a better suited background for a jeep or landrover.

Wow....how could Jaguar possible come out with this after the beautiful XF design?
Ian Callum is slipping.

And for those unfamiliar wtih him:

I liked it with all the glitzy and doctored publicity shots during the debut, but in real photos it doesn't look nearly as nice. I really don't like the headlights, they don't seem to fit the car at all. I love the design of the XF, but the XJ just doesn't do it for me...

I love it!
It's got a living animal look to it because its headlights are irregularly shaped like animal eyes.

This car looks decent fromt the C-Pillar forward. Jaguar should REALLY change the butt end of the car... Those tail lights are killing it.

Is it me, or does the Wheelbase look a little... Short?

They were doing sooo good! The car was almost what could be the best looking in the segment (and when you compete with the S-class, thats a lot). Then the designer got to the rear of the car and just scribbled something on so he could go home for the day. Jag was right there at the finishline! They'd made it deep in the playoffs just for their star point gaurd to lose the game with a weak hook in the fourth. Bottom of the ninth, bases loaded and all they needed was one run to win- and Callum struck out!

That's not the right colour for the car...still waiting to see it in black.

Looks great. Only downside is the rear end of the new XJ. Looks a bit strange, but if I had the money to afford it, I'd buy it.

I think the design of this new XJ is really stunning. It says more "Jaguar" than "British" with a shape that's more athletic than stately (more cat-like than upturned nose). And I really think that's more befitting of what Jaguar stands for. If you want a stately British car, buy a Bentley or a Rolls Royce. In this segment, people who want a car that looks chauffeur driven buy an S-Class or 7 series, or maybe even an LS. I think it's great Jaguar came out with something far more svelte in this segment, and thoroughly modern. Now, admittedly, the blacked-out C-pillars looked better in the company photos, with dark lighting, where in the sunlight they are blatantly obvious with the chrome window surround shining against them.

I get the feeling Jag dealers are going to take the caps off and repaint them body-colored, much like Acura dealers did with the bucktooth grille of the TL. That would look less jarring, and would make the design slightly more harmonious.

Overall though, this is one sporty looking executive sedan, WAY more than the stodgy new 7 series or even the new Panamera, which will be the size of this car but far more ungainly and uncohesive looking. I also think the XJ will have a lot of presence in person. This is a prototype mind you, so paint colors/finishes and panel gaps should look much nicer/more polished on the production car.

i think it looks awesome! well.. besides the black C-pillar..

To me,luxury cars always look better in black or a really dark color. I don't get the feeling of low & sleek, like the Aston Martin Rapide or even the 1999 to 2004 XJs. And by the way, guys, it''s the "D" pillar that's blacked out.
