1987 Buick GNX - Never Found a Home

87 GNX.jpg

Check out this Buick! It's sitting on the showroom floor of Boulevard Buick/Pontiac/GMC in Long Beach, California. It's not just like new, it IS new. The car has 144 miles on it and is only driven occasionally to keep everything working. It's never been sold and never been registered. We asked the owner of the dealership how/why this car came to be he gave a very simple explanation - "The car simply never sold. In fact we only had one serious looker, a kid who couldn't qualify for financing. As the years went by and it continued to collect dust, we just decided to keep it."

This is truly a stunning car, anyone have a guess what it's worth now?

I hope it hasn't been sitting for 22 years just in the open without any restraints or ropes around it. After working in car dealerships for years I can tell you a showroom is one of the most dangerous places a car can be. With all the kids running around or careless people leaning or placing things on cars it usually didnt take more than a few days before they were dented or scratched. What a beautiful car, though. I'm sure it's $80-$100k range now for what was a $35k car new.

Without taking the time to troll ebay or anything I would think it's not even close to $80-$100k, that's pristine vintage Mustang-Camaro-GTO territory.

It's probably worth more than it cost new and the GNX is definitely a collector car, but I don't see how anybody could justify more that $35-$45k.

In the end, it's still an '80's Buick, even if it's a badass '80's buick.

SO, I leave my comment and hit eBay, and there's an '87 GNX with 7K miles and it's up to $60k.

Seems like too much to me, but that's the collector market for you.

I see a future vintage long-term test car!! I say buy it!!

I'd say, if it were a $35k car new in 1987, then it's probably worth about $35k in todays dollars as well. It probably didn't loose anything nominally, but accounting for inflation, it may have lost half it's value. That's my take on things.

I'd say it's worth about $100,000. About $70K for being a GNX and another $30K for being "brand new". Trouble with that is you have to keep it in that state or you will lose that extra value. If you licence it and drive it then it becomes just another GNX.

I bet someone will buy it after reading this.

Someone call that shill Leno. He'll buy anything and swear it's great.

This is the Chrysler Dealership in my area. It really is a crappy dealer. But I'd say it's worth around $60,000.

It seemed nice when I saw it. I wanted it, to be true.

I had no clue why it was there in 2006...

@blueguydotcom

I'm honestly impressed by the cars Leno has in his collection. How can you not be? Just check out his website (www.JayLenosGarage.com).

Back to the Buick. I think it's worth about $45k. Cars.com has restored ones going for about 35k with a couple thousand miles on em.

Living in downtown and being a minority I could never own one of these cars. The police would have me profiled to death in this thing.

I just realized that they only made 547 of these Buicks. In that case, I'd say this GNX is worth over $80k.

It's a perfect fit for being a collectible.

It was a legend when it came out.

Lots of people wanted one but could't afford it.

Very few were made.

It was the last of it's kind. A newer better version didn't come out to steal it's thunder.

People will pay big money for it at the right auction.

I can has GNX?

Ya know, Brian. This would be a great "used" car for the LT fleet.

At the time of its production, the GNX was the fastest mass-produced 4-seater you could buy in the US.

@ suby - yep. I'll see what I can do.

walking_dead says:

its only worth what someone will pay for it.
all you need is someone trying to recapture their youth and its on!

the_big_al says:

yea! I think it would be neat to see this added to the long-term fleet

stovt001 says:

Adding this to the LT fleet would almost make up for the endless stream of BMWs, Minis, Evos, Jetta TDIs, Fits, and Audis. Then again, since it isn't German or Japanese and you can only buy one, this thing doesn't have a shot at making it into the LT fleet.

firstwagon says:

I think a GNX would be a great addition to the fleet but I wouldn't buy that one. You'll pay a big premium for it's "new" status. That one will end up in the hands of a collector who will never drive it, just store it away with dreams of making big money on it.

I think about $4500 if they take advantage of the Cash-For-Clunkers deal.

boioioioing...you know what that means

87gnowner says:

Sad to see how clueless some people are about these cars, especially the person that made the cash for clunkers comment. I would love to see what this would fetch at a Barrett-Jackson auction. It would not surprise me one bit if it was $120K or more even in today's soft market. Some exceptionally nice GNXs have sold for more. $80K-$120K seems to be the price range most GNXs fall into. Add to that the fact that this one's never been titled and has so few miles on it and there you have it. Even the regular Grand Nationals are legendary and were faster than the Corvette in their day; the GNX was about a full second quicker in the 1/4 mile than a GN and as stated above production was very limited at 547. If this thing ever does go back up for sale somebody's going to be the original owner of a very sweet ride, although I'm sure it would be a garage queen. Wish I could be that person.

Fellas, just as a point of reference, a similar 1987 GNX sold in January of 2009 at B-J for $94,600.
