Spy Photos: Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible Shows Off New Wind-Deflection System

5-950.jpg

With the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe already on the way, a convertible version was all but inevitable. Although it's not that hard to imagine what that convertible will look like, these latest spy shots spell it all out for you.

Most of the design cues revealed here are fairly conventional with a soft top, hard cover and a small wind deflector between the rear seats. As the test car got underway, however, our photographers noticed an additional feature that the current CLK cabriolet lacks.

As you can see, what looks to be an auxiliary wind deflector has been placed at the top of the windshield. We assume it bumps the airflow that much higher to keep it off precious bouffants behind the wheel. We assume it works too, as the Germans wouldn't dare use all their technical know how to develop a mere toy, right?

I'm sure I already know the answer, but why not just make a longer windshield? As a convertible owner, I can tell you it doesn't get that windy on the highway. If it's too much, roll up the windows.

I'm assuming this device is intended for folks with a toupee?

That's really ugly. Like an 80s flat top haircut.

^^^ I agree very ugly indeed, ruins the lines and profile of this car. My SLK is fine fine without this feature, however, I guess this intended to take the place of big blocky windscreen. I guess the ladies have to keep that big hair in place after visiting the beauty salons.

It must work REALLY well if they're sacrificing the look this much.

Either that or the company that builds the rag top for MB went belly up and this is their way of securing the roof in the up position in the interim.

Hopefully that wing is manually adjustable and doesn't pop-up automatically.

I think that thing will be manual. Vw has one on the EOS. its pretty cool actually.

Large sunroofed cars have this also. Ford Edge, Lexus Es350,and scion tC are some examples.
