Pontiac Vibe Gets a Date With Death in August

pontiacvibe-555.jpg

No big shocker here as General Motors is basically going through the formalities of winding down a brand at this point. Today's announcement merely added a date to the demise of the Vibe compact wagon.

Production will end in August of this year at Nummi, the plant shared by GM and Toyota plant in Fremont, Ca. GM says it's still considering the production of other future models in the plant, but has no set plans for now.

Too bad - though re-tooling to make it another GM product would have been expensive, this was a solid vehicle with a solid sales record for Pontiac. A good, versatile hatch with good fuel economy - you would think this would be a vehicle they would want to keep, since there is nothing else in the GM lineup like it.

No big deal really. If anyone misses it, they can just go down to toyota and buy the original instead of the clone.

I liked the previous gen Matrix/Vibe more. It was much roomier.

I live in Fremont, CA where NUMMI is, and it would certainly be a pity to lose the plant. Both GM and Toyota have lost a lot of sales though, so it might have to happen.

I don't mind the way the new Vibe looks, but I'm not seeing many of them. When the 1st generation Vibe came out, people bought them up very quickly. There are lots of Vibes around here (and locally built Corollas too).

Really, the Vibe was the embodiment of everything that was wrong with Pontiac. It's was marketed under GM's "performance" division, yet was based on one of the most boring cars in the world, the Corolla.
