Even if the only U.S. carrier to have the iPhone still doesn't have MMS figured out (how is that possible?), AT&T did win the turn-by-turn navi race - AT&T Navigator is currently available for the iPhone via the App Store.
The free app is simply an iPhone-compatible version of the wireless giant's navigation software offered on its other smartphones. Some features include the ability to find the lowest gas prices along the route, real-time traffic updates, voice prompting, points of interest, speech recognition and automatic rerouting.
You might want to stick with your standard GPS unit though, considering it requires a $9.99 per month subscription and only works when you have a signal.
AT&T Releases Turn-by-Turn GPS Navigation for iPhone

Please, that really burns me. AT&T are such greedy pigs that I intend to drop them as soon as I can get the iPhone through other carriers. For the functions of the iPhone to work, I already have to spend $120/month. And that's for 3G that really isn't, tons of dropped calls and huge no-service areas... in Manhattan for christsake! Now to spend another $10 more per month to fix what I consider to be a flawed navigation function is not even a consideration. I spent about $2k on my car nav system which is pretty decent, so I'll live with that. But I refuse to give AT&T another nickel for lousy iPhone service.

^ I agree. I'm sure it's not worth it. As much as I would love to have GPS, I'm holding on to my 2G iPhone for the same reason. I just refuse to give AT&T more money until they come to their senses and give us some decent rates and 3G speeds.

Get the T-mobile G1...has all the applications the iphone has...most are free, and the bill is a lot cheaper than the iphone.

Why would someone use this over just google maps? For spoken directions? Is that really necessary?

What pisses me off is that AT&T has been busy working on this when TomTom will soon release an undoubtedly better and no monthly fee turn-by-turn app, WHILE I STILL CAN'T SEND OR RECEIVE PICTURE MESSAGES!

I think the reason AT&T hasn't enabled MMS messages is simple. Their network probably can't handle the stress it would receive when every single iPhone user starts sending hundreds of picture messages.

The "innovative" Iphone, just like the Kia Borrego, 4 years late to the market...
I'll keep my Blackberry, thank you very much.

I'll wait for the TomTom app. TomTom will offer a mounting accessory instead of the need to hold your iPhone up near the windshield while driving. I doubt there will be a monthly fee for TomTom... at most, you might have to pay for annual updates, but that's with any GPS unit. I love my iPhone 3GS, and AT&T has been good for me. The pricing isn't really out of the league. Verizon charges about the same for similar features, but with Verizon, you only get 5GB of data usage, 5000 text messages (no true unlimited), and you have to pay an extra $2 per month for visual voicemail which is included with the iPhone plan. My area was late to get 3G, but I can pull about 1.5 Mbps average at my house in a rural area, and when I go into town, I've pulled over 2 Mbps. Very impressed with data speeds considering Verizon's best DSL plan is only 3 Mbps (which a speed test reveals you never get much better than 2 Mbps) in most areas.
A friend of mine was all excited to shove his new Sprint BlackBerry in my face last weekend. Saying about how fast it was blah blah blah. So, I put my iPhone 3GS in his hands ... to make a long story short, he shut up fairly quickly and actually got jealous. When I tried to use his BlackBerry, that retarded little trackball drove me insane! The UI of the BlackBerry can't compare to the iPhone by a long shot.
Yes, MMS should be available now, and it should have been available since day 1. The same goes with cut, copy & paste. As far as speed goes, I emailed myself a picture from my iPhone 3GS, and it was in my inbox on my computer within 2 seconds.
Overall, I love my iPhone and the more than 50,000 and counting apps to choose from. And, since Apple released and approved apps for Push Notification, I'm tickled! It's an amazing feature that lets you have many important apps or fun apps (AIM, Yahoo!) push alerts to your phone immediately when something updates and no need to run in the background to kill your battery.
And, now since I've upgraded to a Mac, my iPhone is in perfect harmony with my computer when I sync it. Since the iPhone runs on OSX, there's little to no fear of catching the new strain of cellphone viruses, spyware and phishing that's found with ANYTHING that runs Windows! Apples are expensive, but they're worth every penny!

iPhone is really the best smart phone out there, but AT&T is the horrible demon to have captured it!
I can't wait for the day when other network providers Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint etc. will release her from the shackles of AT&T...
