2010 Ford Taurus Road Trip: Accessory Mode Without the Accessories

#Ford Taurus -- This one puzzles me every time I fuel up our 2010 Ford Taurus Limited. I have no access to trip computer functions in accessory mode. I can't reset or even look at the trip meter or odometer unless the engine is running.

I have never encountered this in any other vehicle, so I can only assume this particular arrangement has something to do with the keyless start on this Taurus Limited.

That is very strange. I bet the service staff hate this.

Please try this: WITHOUT your foot on the brake, start the car as if you were actually starting car, only the engine won't start due to your foot not being on the brake, but the rest of the car will come alive, and the trip computer etc. should then show up.

In the cars with a conventional key I have driven, these systems are only on when the key is in the "on" position, not the accessory. A keyless system is going to have a different way of turning the car on without starting it, and I wouldn't be surprised if different manufacturers come up with different ways of doing this, just like they have come up with different ways of unlocking the doors.

charlesncharge, yes, that's accessory mode. As the video confirms.

It seem's that Erin hates the 2010 Ford Taurus, hooray for Erin.
Why on earth does'nt she just park it by the side of the road and continue her journey west by foot?

If Erin is honest her conclusion ending her journey should read like this

"I will never in my life buy this car and I strongly suggest that the fifty or so people who have followed my nagging for the last few days do the same"
The 2010 Ford Taurus is a vehicle that the world did'nt ask for, to big to wide to tall...
Now where's the nearest Lucille's Smokehouse BBQ?

Erin how many times did you hit the start button? Try hitting it twice, and then fiddle with the trip computer.

@gdmstrb: I hit the button dozens of times. Other editors have tried it, too, and reached the same conclusion.

@fniguy28: I wish all our commentors were as friendly as you are. Thanks for the love. :)

Here's what a google search tells us about Erin's expertise as an automobile writer........

Erin Riches serves as Editor of Edmunds Inc. (also known as Edmunds.com). Ms. Riches is hanging onto the impressive-sounding title of Senior Editor, Content and Syndication, which gives her more opportunities to think about the bigger, grander issues facing Edmunds.com. In early 2000, Ms. Riches found an on-line classified listing for an editorial job at Edmunds.com and somehow managed not to screw up too badly during her interview. Since then, she has done quite a bit ... of reading and driving, and has at times feasted parasitically on the vast automotive knowledge of other editors here. She has been known to drive a 1995 Nissan 240SX and a 1997 Saab 900 SE Turbo convertible. She edited the college's small, unsuccessful newspaper and spent a summer working at the copy desk of The Vindicator, the daily paper of Youngstown, Ohio. She ventured a few hours south to Memphis, where she attended little-known Rhodes College and earned a B.A. in art. Ms. Riches post-college years brought her to Southern California in pursuit of love and graduate school.

What part of her resume qualify's her as a serious automobile writer for such an important vehicle from an American car company?
I'm sure but I could be wrong that it's not the pursuit of love

That's....incredibly rude. Erin is a superb member of the Edmunds team. Her contributions are both witty and insightful. Personal attacks are not condoned here.

Incredibly rude he may have been, but his facts stand......
Who are these writers, Erin, to point fingers that can make or break a vehicle?
7 million Ford Taurus's have been sold across America since th mid 1980's of those 4 million are still on the road.....

Think about this for a second.
The 4 million people who are currently driving a Ford Tarus liked the vehicle so much that they bought one.
