Toyota Official Questions Viability of Plug-In Hybrids

volt-plug-555.jpg

Bill Reinert, Toyota's U.S. national manager for advanced technology, told a National Academy of Sciences panel in Washington, D.C., Monday that the success of plug-in hybrids depends on their advantages over traditional hybrids.

"There is a great deal of variation on how current PHEVs perform in real-world conditions," Reinert said.

Although his statements sound like direct shots at cars like the Chevrolet Volt and Fisker Karma, Toyota is also testing plug-in variations of the Prius so he's probably speaking about their own conclusions.

I really don't see this as an attack against the Volt.

Maybe Tesla, Think, Mini-E or others like that. Not the Volt.

I'm really interested in the idea of a plug-in hybrid as a daily commuter car. If the Chevy Volt was available today, I'd be at a dealership today asking to test drive one.

"I really don't see this as an attack against the Volt."

The Chevy Volt is a plug-in HYBRID -- the topic of the article.

"Maybe Tesla, Think, Mini-E or others like that. Not the Volt."

I don't know about the others but the Tesla is a pure plug-in.

I share the article's concern about the feasibility of the Volt; I don't think the savings in gasoline that the Volt can provide outweigh the 15k premium over the Prius/Insight and other traditional hybrids.

Its an attack on the Volt as well. Toyota has been sewing seeds of doubt about the Volt indirectly for some time now. They have made it clear that they dont see a bright future for plugins and (surprise!) think conventional hybrids are the way to go. If GM were doubting Toyota tech the pundit would be outraged and claim GM needed to shut up and start innovating. If Toyota doubts plug ins we are told there is a sound scientific reason for it- it has nothing to do with them being worried about another company grabbing more "green" headlines than they do.

You might want to see a doctor about those paranoid delusions of yours.

I think everyone is attacking the Volt. The Volt came in a dream to me bearing the children of my wife. The Volt said to me, "this is the future". I watched in my dream as the plug inserted into the outlet. A rejuvenating wave of light over came me, and I fell on my knees.
When I awoke, that is how I know the Volt is our prophet, to cleanse the world of all these false promises. They claim to know the path to the future of our energy policy, but all they are doing is conspiring with OPEC to take control of America. Toyota, Honda, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, they're all in this. They're all pawns of OPEC trying to destroy our true prophet.
If we all wake up from their oppression, we can finally destroy these evil beings casting shadows of foreign dictatorships devouring our wills. People, pray for deliverence to the truth that the Volt brings. Our lives will be one with the Volt and joy will wash over the land. There is hope for America. Open your mind and let the Volt walk into your dreams.

I had another dream with this man in a black cloak. He called himself Elon. I don't know what country people call themselves Elon, but it sure isn't America. That's when I knew he was one of the false ones. He came telling me how heavy my baby would be were I to drive an electric car with my baby in it. He keeps telling me how the baby would be deadweight for 40 miles, and then after 40 miles when the baby awoke, the baby would cry really loud but he wouldn't help the car move any faster, since he's just a baby. Then he handed my baby back over to my wife instead of me. That's when I knew I had to fight him and wake up. So I shoved him backward, he disappeared into the cloak as it fell on the ground. Then I woke up and saw I had the baby, not my wife. This confirmed to me that this Elon was a false one trying to destroy our future. The Volt is our only hope. We have to pray for the Volt until it is delivered to this world with panel plastic wrapping shields and battery terminal divider wraps intact.

Anyone else notice from the picture that either Dracula, or at least a zombie extra from Night of the Living Dead, appears to be plugging the Volt in?

I can see the headlines now:
