Production 5-Series GT revealed: Just as strange as concept

BMW 5 series r34 lead 555.jpg

Photographs of the upcoming 5-series GT have leaked out ahead of the, er, thing's presumed reveal at this fall's Frankfurt auto show.

And, sadly, it has not gotten any prettier on the road from concept to production. French car magazine L'Automobile had photos first. We expect more information to be revealed in the coming days on this bizarre mash-up of sedan, wagon, crossover and toothpaste tube.

It's hard to imagine that the 5-series GT won't be offered with a twin-turbo inline six or a twin-turbo V8, at least for the U.S. market. All-wheel-drive will almost certainly be an option too.

For now, have a look at these photos -- if you dare.

I like the side view...and the idea is solid. But the interior and the nose job need further refinement. Oh, and price? Probably too high.

Frankly, I think it's better-looking than a 5-series notchback sedan, although that probably qualifies as "damning with faint praise," since I'm not a big fan of recent BMWs.

You know, it's actually not bad. It actually looks better than the concept in some ways.

I still can't shake the thought that this shoulda been a Saab.

fugly. BMW has lost it.

BMW, please stop. You make very nice coupes, wagons, and sedans and people love them. You make these really weird segment busters and they suck. Make like Honda and stick to what you know.

WOW, the title of this post seems like they held back.

"Just as strange as concept"??? Come on - It should have been Just as UGLY as the concept. Come on Straightline...grow a set and really call it what it is, ugly!

Looks nice to me. I like it.
With these shots, it looks like the hood line lines up with the trunk lid line, which is good.

X6- fat heavy impractical X5

5GT - fat heavy impractical 5 series sedan

BMW- fat heavy impractical middle managers

Damn I don't know what you all are smoking, but I'm smoking the right stuff. This car is something I want to be staring at on the road. That butt is a relaxing sight, on par with my wife's butt.

firstwagon says:

Interesting.

They managed to get the hatchback look but skipped on the actual hatchback part of it.

elciddragon says:

Now that I look at it more, the roofline reminds me a lot of the Panamera, just that the back has the stub sticking out instead of a rounded finish. I have to say, somehow it just works better in these photos than as the concept. I also hated the X6 when I first saw it on a billboard, but now it works...these designs have a weird way of doing that.

Anyways, if you want classic sporty BMW: Get a 135i.

bankerdanny says:

I am w/Firstwagon. I thought it was a hatch until I saw the last photo. The flat opening would probably make getting gold bags in and out, but not so much for groceries or luggage.

Why not just go the full hatchback route. You have the roofline already and it probaly wouldn't compromise structural rigidity much.

I'm not sure what the point is here and why this would be more appealing than the regular wagon.

That's not all the photos...Autocar has a full gallery ( http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsGallery.aspx?AR=240280&EL=-1&IM=243319 ) which shows the two stage hatch...personally, I think its slick, although something that will tank in the US...see Mazda6 hatchback...

the current 5 series really really grew on me,

The current face looks feline, sleek, sexy, brutal

this looks, snout like, swine like,, not sexy, not sleek

sorry

i'm waiting for the current M5 to hit 30k on the used market
hopefully i'll still have a job by then

bankerdanny says:

02:09 PM, 05/21/09

Well there you go, it IS a hatch. I'm still not sure why you would want this over the wagon, but at least it makes more sense.

walking_dead says:

02:30 PM, 05/21/09

er...

remember the 318? this is very awkward.

it has an amazing interior, 2 buckets in the back (excellent as an
chauffeur driven sedan for an executive that does not want to stand out, but then its a "hatch back" thingy

will soccer moms want a 4 seat sedan?

"I still can't shake the thought that this shoulda been a Saab."

Thought the same thing. This is what Saab could have been today. Who knows though? With this trend of hatchback-coupe looking cars, Saab could finally make a hatchback version of the 9-3 again.

As for the BMW, I love it! I'd buy it over a normal 5 series for no legit reason other than the looks. The interior looks pretty good too. But then again, I'm a Saab fan :)

BMW must have asked Bangle for one more gem before he left and he pulled a crumpled up piece of paper out of the trash can, straightened it out and gave it to them. Now he is laughing as he cruises off in the GINA concept.

albook says:

I kinda like the concept (no not the show car, the idea) its just that BMW seem to falter on the delivery. they've been doing that a lot lately.

hondacura4 says:

03:42 PM, 05/21/09

^^ I like the concept also however the GT didnt come out that bad. If BMW could some how restrain their use of organic shapes and go back to the more taught/crisp styling of past BMW's, this GT would look a lot better.

roar02ram says:

05:15 PM, 05/21/09

BTW - has anyone else noticed that the BMW nose is looking a little generic these days? Really, how different is this snout from the upcoming (and also ugly) X1's? And the 7 has the same front...

Just please GOD I hope they don't ruin the 3 or feed us another mediocre 5...

roadburner says:

07:33 PM, 05/21/09

I like the versatility of a hatch, but I don't want something as massive as the 5er. I hope Munich builds a 3 Series GT with a touch more aggressive styling.

cwc1 says:

09:24 PM, 05/21/09

This thing is just too alien for me. Ugly.

I think BMW already has ruined their sedans; first the 2002 7 series, then the 5 in 2004, and lastly the 3 in 2006. But the 3 series coupes pretty much have always looked good, starting from the E36 in '92, to the sleeker E46, and the E92. Not so much for the 6 series coupe though.

The best looking 5-series sedans to me were the E34 and E39.

atomikweasel says:

12:26 AM, 05/22/09

It's a perfectly good looking machine. I don't know what your issues are, but wonderful though the 3-series is, it doesn't fill all needs. Perhaps your idea of superb architecture is the mega-McMansions of the hedge fund managers in Connecticut?

cb_racer says:

08:35 AM, 05/22/09

The BMW engineers must have way too much free time in their hands and no leadership. What is this ridiculous car? They should spend time trying to make the I-Drive useful (or getting rid of it preferably).

deaconnc says:

08:24 PM, 05/22/09

This thing is hideous. Why? If you want more utility than a 5 sedan, why not buy an X5 or a 5 wagon? What is the point (same can be said for the X6 thingamajig)?

albook says:

03:57 PM, 05/23/09

No- we'll let the X6 go 'cuz it would be fine if it weren't so close to the X5 in size. The concept actually kinda makes sense. But this does not. The X6 is a mix of 5 series and X5. This is a mix of 5 series and X6. With the addition of this and the X1, BMW will simply have too many cars.

awalt3427 says:

BMW has totally lost my support now. To me, Lexus now has all of the good styling in the market. Mercedes lost it for me when they came out with that hideous new S-Class. After that trauma, I had to see that fugly new BMW 7-Series go into the market with that way to understated styling. I have always been a Lexus fan, and lately, with their new design philosophy of L-Finesse, they have one all of my votes.

P.S. BMW's recent models such as the X6, and that piece of crap on this page further pursue my increased liking of Lexus.
