New Honda Crossover Spotted in Smoky Mountains

honda-f34-555.jpg

This is the long-rumored Honda hatchback/crossover/wagon thing. As you can see, it was shot by one Mr. M. Balisky, apparently while he was vacationing in the Great Smoky Mountains, one of America's most popular national parks.

We're guessing it won't be quite so popular with Honda engineers from now on, as they've done a pretty good job of keeping the lid on this new model up to this point. Most speculation points to a fall debut for this variation of the Accord, but as usual Honda is saying much for now.

awful, like most honda designs.

I was honestly hoping that the accord 4 door coupe would turn out a bit nicer. Hopefully, for the love of God, Honda designers consider changing this up a bit... I'm hoping to see the front bumper without the camo before further judgement.

I was hoping to replace my last gen Highlander with an Accord wagon. But this is Heinous. There have been some ugly Honda/Acura designs as of late, but this is ridiclous. The Venza is looking pretty good right now. Heck, a 1994 Outback wagon looks better than that.

redliner says:

Whoever is head of design at Honda (and Acura for that matter) should be shot. Twice. In the head. There isn't a single design in Hondas entire lineup that i find even remotely appealing, with exception of the Pilot, and thats just boring. S2000, where art thou?

Enough of this weird space age styling, what happened to classic designs. the 1990 Honda Accord was, IMHO, one of their best.

4g63 says:

Honda's recent new designs are either too conservative or too ugly or both. the best looking honda recently is the Civic and the Fit IMO. TL is ugly. RL is now ugly and overpriced. Pilot is very ugly (look at that grill). Ridgeline to use Pilot's grill. No more S2000. NSX is dead. Still no V8. What's going on?!

Guys, quit saying how bad Honda's designs are. Guess which auto maker is losing the least in this bad economy.....Honda. V8? Who is buying V8 nowadays? That would be a stupid move for Honda to make a V8 RWD sedan. Did Honda develop a V8 for the company? You bet. Check indy 500.

Think of how many more cars Honda would sell if they had atractive designs. Even the guys I know that live and breath Honda don't exactly rave about the styling.

REDLINER: I hope you were just so angry over seeing this that you simply forgot that the Civic is the best looking car in the class. Otherwise, I totally agree with you, except for that Pilot statement, because I think the Pilot is the ugliest thing they make.

This won't even be competition for the very attractive Venza. And all you out there who say "well Honda must be doing something right because they've lost the least amount of money out of major automakers" well, their losses continue to grow. And seeing products like this in the future pipline tells me that trend will accelerate.

pbrahma says:

Honda should design their vehicles more in Japan. All their products lately are unusual to their unique Japanese designs. It's too much Americans. But i understand why Honda mostly designed in American, because America is Honda #1 market.

First they #@$%ed the design of the new Acuras, now they started @#$%ing Honda new models. Wthat the #@!$%@ is that. What is that hideous piece of flat sheet metal between the rear doors and the rear windshield doing there. Enough is enough. My next car is going to be a Fiasler.

"Think of how many more cars Honda would sell if they had atractive designs."

I really dont think its the designs as a whole its the odd proportions that ruin the design and the fact the design elements Honda uses arent cohesive. Design elements should flow and work together, however Honda's most recent design elements seem to be forced to work together. Combine that with odd proportions and the end result isnt all that great.

Remember when Chris Bangle started the "Bangle butt" and flame surfacing? I think every auto publication and BMW enthusiast criticized the styling changes, the same with Honda. However, the execution of the elements (the elements worked together) and those classic BMW proportions made everything come together even if they didnt have the visual stimulation of past BMW's. BMW and Honda are much closer than people would think.

"I was honestly hoping that the Accord 4 door coupe would turn out a bit nicer."

This isnt a Honda 4door coupe as its much more of a Venza fighter yet will offer a much better driving experience. The Venza is the looker of the 2 by large margin however.

Honda design head: Dave Merrick

Acura design head: Damon Schell

Even though Acura has its new design studio 100% seperated from Honda the original design elements were executed by Dave as he was part of both teams before Acura got their own studio. Remember that HIDEOUS luxury sedan concept that debuted a couple of years ago? Dave Merrick had a lot to do with that. Great, ethusiastic guy but his design influence and execution is a bit odd.

Cool, since this generation of accord managed to bumble together a number of the odd aesthetics of bmw's cars, this thing is set to do the same with the x6!

I'm the happy owner of a 2007 Mazda 6 5-door(hatchback). It's a lot nicer than this bloated piece of manure. The only good result of it would be to have Mazda bring in the Euro and Japan market 5-door version of the Mazda 6 to the USA.

This looks more like a Hyundai, a big disappointment if a Honda looks like Hyundai; I love Honda and I am sure this crossover will be good in performance just like CRV is; however, I have serious doubts if it can compete with Venza.

I am not sure what this is, but to me it looks rather strange. If this is any sign of whats to come at Honda, they need to fire whoever is in charge of the exterior designs. I know Honda can do much better than this. There is nothing wrong with Hyundai, but why is Honda trying to make a car look like one? I always thought it was the other way around. I can only hope that they will realize this before they bring this contraption to market. If I buy an Accord I am likely to stick to a normal 4 door EX, in dark grey, with black leather, I-4, 5 speed manual, tinted windows, drilled aluminum foot-pedals, and a wheel/tire upgrade. This will be followed by Suspension upgrades, a more free flowing exhaust, cold air intake, and a possible HKS turbo kit. Now...thats an Accord. I rest my case.

"This isnt a Honda 4door coupe as its much more of a Venza fighter yet will offer a much better driving experience".

If that is the case, then I have nothing to worry about!

Call me crazy but I actually like Honda designs. Most of them are completely different, which sets them apart from everyone. Whether or not one enjoys the styling means nothing to those who already own a Honda. Hell, everyone in my family has a Honda, and they all love the way it looks. Same goes for everyone I know that owns (at least) one. It is one of those things that you will learn to appreciate!

In the case of Acura, after seeing the redesigned TSX and TL in person, I tossed aside every previous opinion I had on them. Their design is well beyond anything on the market right now. I'm so tired of seeing MB's and BMW's and Lexus's, especially after owning the previous generation 5 series. It's getting to be quite an eyesore. In this day and age, German luxury manufacturers simply can't keep up with the pace of the Japanese (however, this is only my opinion).

I don't think I'm alone on what I'm about to say but:

1) HONDA/ACURA NEEDS TO [BOLD] FIRE [/BOLD] ALL DESIGNERS AND PRODUCT MANAGERS!!

2) Cancel whatever monstrosity this is and the ZDX.

3) Instead of this, why not just make an Accord Wagon? Or "sportwagen" as Vw/Audi seem to do so well?

The current acura designers all needed to be FIRED or relocated. They have killed the MDX I was ok with, the TSX that I liked, and the TL I loved!! Then they had the audacity to produce the ZDX and now THIS!!??

WTF HONDA?!?!?

Ps Honda: I hear Chris Bangle is looking for a job ;)

Looks awesome, high time that Honda did a big hatchback. Of course, I wouldn't count on too many U.S. sales because "wagons" (in all their guises: minivan, avants, tourings, ect) sell like cow pies in this country.

machine_man says:

It looks better without the disguise but it's probably still not a looker. Am I the only one who notices that there's a blocked out rear quarter window? Look at the lines above and behind the rear passenger window. It continues to the belt line in the back. The tail lights are also partially hidden on the side.

Honda's designers do deserve some physical abuse for what they've been turning out. The accord looks good from every angle but the front. The civic is the only good looking Honda... the fit is O.K. but that's about it. The sides and lines do make me think Hyundai... the worst of Hyundai, not Genesis or Sonata but Elantra and Touscon...

Seriously, the 6 hatchback looks wayyyyyyyyyy better than this, even with its disguise. Mazda made a mistake in not bringing it back to the US, especially with the way it looks now.

http://www.netcarshow.com/mazda/2008-6_wagon/800x600/wallpaper_09.htm

Sexy...on par looks-wise with the new CTS Wagon. This thing, on the other hand, looks good from the rear (are those LED taillights I see?), but if Honda keeps the current Accord nose, as it appears, count me out.

eric_l says:

I know that Honda is trying to spin this as the "wagon" version of the Accord but with a sportier shape, but this really flies in the face of the typical Accord buyer. I think a low slung crossover like the Venza is for the Camry would be more appropriate.

firstwagon says:

05:18 PM, 05/31/09

I don't see the Verza as low slung. I see it as a too tall, too heavy Camry wagon.

This may be wagon version of the Accord but the fastback style will really limit the cargo space.

coldcase says:

08:30 PM, 05/31/09

Wow. This is one ugly car/crossover. I hope this is a mistake because if it's the real thing then Honda designers should be fired.

I used to own an Si. Wonderful car, but i hated, hated, hated the look. Mine was a red 4 door though. I only had it for 5 months, then i replaced it with my current car. (NOT A HONDA!)

I was really hoping we'd get a good looking and handling "accord wagon" but I must say I'm kinda disappointed ... the early spyshots with the European Accord Wagon mule had me excited for a while. too bad, it morphed into this.

The Venza is definitely a contender when I have to give up my 08 Suby OB when my car plan runs out in 201... well I have tinme, maybe it'll grow on me :)
