Mahindra Delays U.S. Pickup Truck Until 2010

mahindra.jpg Mahindra and Mahindra has once again delayed the introduction of its compact pickup truck in the States. The company now says it will introduce the truck sometime in 2010.

The Indian company originally planned to build the truck in a plant in Ohio, but it now says it will import fully assembled trucks from India. Even with the so-called 25% "chicken tax" on imported trucks, Mahindra says it's still cheaper than getting a U.S. plant ready for production.

The Mahindra pickup is expected to use a 2.2-liter diesel engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission and sell for $22,000 to $25,000.

UPDATE: Mahindra spokesman Mike Geylin says the original report misquoted the company's representative. The company is still planning to start sales of its compact truck later this year in select markets.

I don't understand why there is a 25% tax on imported trucks. The big 3 have alway dominated the pick up market so it serves no purpose.

Why hasn't the tax been removed?

Loved everything about the story but the headline and the first paragraph because neither is true. Global Vehicles, which is the exclusive importer/distributor of Mahindra & Mahindra vehicles in the U.S., will ship the first Mahindra pickup trucks to its dealers in the Southeast (the first region going "live" in the regional roll out) before the end of 2009. There is no change in the plans for this introduction.

Good to hear from someone in the know.

Any chance it will come to Canada?

Oh gosh oh gosh oh gosh!!! What are we going to do without Mahindra trucks for so long?!! How can we survive without Mahindra trucks until 2010?!! Save yourselves!

Yeah, imagine.... someone expecting to sell a reasonable size truck with a large bed and a good diesel engine to Americans.

Good Gosh... what are they thinking?

ctpax says:

Yes, these trucks will save America's fuel and industrial problems and maybe there will even be a little surplus for Canada!

The sooner this gift from India arrives to our shores (American shores, not Canadian) the better off everybody will be.

Uh. Looks like a road trip to GA from NJ. Can I order one in GA and pick it up in NJ.

I'm not quite understanding what your beef is.

It's a good practical truck that has no real competion. More choice is always good.

Why do you sound so bent out of shape about it?

I'm not sure what you are talking about. Mahindra trucks are going to outsell F-150s and Silverados here in America. Probably on the scale of 10 to 1.

Are you trying to translate my comments into something they are not?

Reason for the sarcasm?

I don't know why everyone gets so excited. Every non-US review I've ever read of these things are terrible. Just because you would like a diesel version of the Ranger, doesn't mean the anything diesel is great.

I don't know why we should look forward to paying more for junk.

While I can't speak for everyone (meaning librarian_ocnj, the only other person to make a positive post here), there are several things I like.

1. As you mentioned, it's a diesel.

2. As we don't have the "chicken tax" in Canada, it should be 25% less or start around $16,500.

3. From what I've read, it's capacities are simular to a full size but is priced less then the Ranger.

4. I just like trucks that are designed to be trucks.

5. I've talked to people from India and these trucks are basic but certainly not junk.

"1. As you mentioned, it's a diesel."

Yup.

"2. As we don't have the "chicken tax" in Canada, it should be 25% less or start around $16,500."

The math doesn't work that way. It's $17,600 (US). Try adding 25% and you'll see it works. I'm willing to bet they'll find a way to charge $20,000 (US) in Canada.

"3. From what I've read, it's capacities are simular to a full size but is priced less then the Ranger."

The capacities are hocus pocus. I bet it performs like a Ranger. Unless pricing is different in the Great White North, the Ranger is priced less. $16,400 list, $14,000 street.

"5. I've talked to people from India and these trucks are basic but certainly not junk."

From what I've read, these are not vehicles that you want to spend any amount of time in. The reviews also indicate build issues, like (non-drivetrain) parts falling off. Really below par for what's considered acceptable in the US and Canada.

They serve a purpose, but that purpose is limited. I guess we'll see when they start showing up.

@brn: Capacities are hocus pocus? What's your source?

Mahindra pickups are said to start in the mid- to low-$20,000s. If the specs they claim are true, it serves a BIG purpose and has no competition I can think of.
High-torque, 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission that’s expected to be rated at least 30 mpg on the highway and be able to haul up to 2,700 pounds and tow up to 5,000 pounds.
My concern is quality and reliability as well, but their US tractors are solid, based on reviews (Google "Mahindra Tractors reviews")

We'll see

Heres my two cents
a few things a lot of people have forgotten!
the chicken tax thing has been around a long time and althou it could have been rewritten long ago to something that is usefull, it remains. it is an inport protection law for us automakers, protecting trucks imports. us automakers have only had competion in recent years.
im in kuwait right now and have been all over the world. these little 3liter diesel pickups are everywhere, if that will show you potential market share. they buy these simple trucks for thier durability. in the us we tend to buy new vehicles every 3 years. in developing nations they dont have the money for this, they require longivity, low maintenance, fuel economy and dependability. how many rangers are still running around for contractors and work sites. i dont have a ranger because of one need, space for more more than 2 passengers. i do have a dodge dakota quad cab. i needed basic towing, basic cargo capacity for occasional plywood and other home improvment needs, seating for 4-5, low maintenance.as its also my daily ride i need decent fuel efficiency(i prefer diesel). a bulletproof quad cab truck that gets 30+mpg, if it performs like advertised im trading in when i get home. as for quality, price, and service think about this for a second, they are trying to get in the market, does anyone think their will be many problems with these vehicles, i think they will check recheck and check again for a few years. if anything does come up i bet they will have it fixed fast. right now they wont want any bad publicity. these trucks will sell faster than they can get them here, and a diesel hybrid in the works too. us automakers had better be afraid. the only possible way for their to be any competition is toyota, izuzu, or nissan to bring over thier little diesel trucks, but by that time mahindra will be several years ahead of the curve. someone know what mahindra's stock ticker is?

I remember the days of the VW Pickup. I don't know why VW doesn't bring it back. 45 MPG, and perfect for weekender DIY'rs.

Chevy has a Tornado that's small and gets 30 MPG but only sells in Mexico, and the same equivalent sells as the Montana in Brazil. I don't know why they don't bring it here.

I need a compact PU for weekend stuff that gets GREAT MPG's. and Nobody makes one. I dont' need or want a Full Size or Colorado size. I want a PU that gets GREAT MPG's. Give me the Mahindra Diesel Hybrid that their promising will get 40 MPG. Even better.
