Ken Block is a rally car driver, skateboarder, snowboarder and - let's not forget -- shrewd business man. The current Subaru Rally Team USA driver and co-founder of DC shoes, last year turned a day of sliding his gymkhana car around a California airbase into one of the most popular automotive internet videos of all time .
How do you top that? You go bigger of course. Higher production values. Better location. And, naturally, a new, faster and more powerful car. And if you're Ken Block you make the whole thing an informercial to promote DC's latest clothing collection - like we said, he's shrewd.
The video, "Gymkhana Two Project, The Informercial," makes no claims to be anything but what it is: shameless motorsports eye candy with a few keenly placed DC products thrown in on skateboarders Rob Dyrdek and Jason Ellis.
We attended a media preview of the video at the Port of Los Angeles, where it was shot, Tuesday night - six days before it will debut on Block's website and, presumably, everywhere else on the internet.
The video we saw was about 80 percent complete and, like all sequels, it attempts to trump the original with the glory of cinema and, in this case, horsepower. Also, like most sequels, it has a tough time living up to the original's staggering visuals and physical improbabilities - probably because the original was exactly that: extraordinarily original.
What you get with Gymkhana Two, also from Director Joshua Martelli, are some spectacular slow-motion sequences, some juiced-up car tricks including fire, water balloons and fluorescent light bulbs. Yes, you read that right, fluorescent light bulbs. And they are very cool.
We asked Block how many takes were required to nail the video's most risky shot -- a long slide with the bumper visibly touching the edge of the dock. "Seven times," he said, which is exactly seven times more than we would have tried it.
The big news is the new car which is more race car than street car. Powered by E85, the 2009 WRX STI uses a Motec ECU and a huge Garrett turbo to make 560 wheel horsepower and 611 lb-ft of torque from 2.65 liters.
And, yes, that's more than enough power to spin all four BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW tires forward as the car is sliding backwards. See it here for yourself on June 1. -- Josh Jacquot, Senior Road Test Editor

I'm surprised the car isn't shod with the stickier BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KD rubber.

Drifting -- even more useless than NASCAR.
Sorry..... I don't get it.

m6vx, those of us that think drifting is way overdone aren't supposed to read these threads.

Is it likely the WRX drive train was completely rebuilt to handle 560 HP?

The original was jaw-dropping, can't wait for part deux!

@m6vx
Wow.
Saying Gymkhana is "drifting" is like saying playing an instrument in an orchestra is "breathing".

kurtamaxxxguy: Yes, they said the engine is 5.65 liters and the stock unit is 2.5 liters. It is a fully built up motor.

2.65 liters is what I meant to say there.

I agree that drifting is somewhat lame but this guy's driving skills are absolutely amazing as is the car.

I agree with m6vx.
I suppose drifting was an amusing stunt when it first hit the media but that was a long time ago and it's 15 minutes of fame have expired.
It's like a burn-out competion. Fun to watch briefly but hardly a sport.

Re: M6vx and firstwagon
Its all part of a culture. Something you may not be able to grasp or understand. A 30 Billion dollar industry that has spawned from Gran Turismo and I hate to say it Fast and Furious. You don't have to call it a sport but appreciate it for what it is, especially in this economic crisis!

How is Gymkhana performed? Does anybody know?

You don't need to be a fan of drifting, rally driving, gymkhana, or any other motorsports discipline to appreciate Ken Block's over-the-top videos.
This guy took a small fortune earned through the sale of his company DC and invested it into....his passion for driving. It's much more fun to watch Block doing insane tricks with the WRX than the Ivy League alternative: another rich guy in the Ferrari Challenge Series.
