A discount Mercedes-Benz? Hardly. More competitive is probably a better description of the this more affordable E-Class. As Senior Editor Erin Riches notes, the new E550 shows no signs of cost cutting despite a sizable drop in its base price. It's still feels over-engineered, and in all the right ways. Will greater affordability make this E-Class a more popular luxury sedan? Or does it stand to lose customers because it's not as exclusive anymore?

I have thought (for the last couple of generations) that the E is about as close to perfect as anyone has gotten for a "mainstream" mid to large sedan. I'm glad the new one seems to be as good or better - however, I think I prefer the styling of the current model over this new one.

i agree with rick about the styling of the current model (exterior wise)

I like the rear end, but the quad-exhaust tip-like fog lights(?) at the front have to go. And the trapezoidal headlamps just don't say Mercedes to me.

Does the front clip of the old car fit on the new one?

I do not find this to be an improvement over the current model.

I love it.
Too bad its dynamics suck so bad. 62.8 mph /60.5 mph? A crossover with the same interior space can go faster than that, with much less power. (CX-7)

I hope they come out with a non-AMG, V6 sporty-tuned version.

I'm surprised how small this car is on the inside. Mainstream sedans like the Camry and Accord are way larger than this.

Nothing out of the ordinary for the E-Class. I like the interior although it looks a tab bit small in the pic, could be different in the flesh. I think it will do well among the E-Class faithful.
